Very useful information, thank so much!
I dug out a 5m atropurpureum with a stem as big as your upper leg that was there for many many years, planted it in a 500 liter pot with a great draining tree-mix and put it in a heavy shaded area for a year. It did absolutely great. The root ball was only half as deep as the pot, and when I sold the tree not even 9 months later, it had already roots coming out of the pot at the bottom. These trees can handle so much more than you think. Never fertilized it either. Bought it for 90, sold it for 900, and bought many new acers with the proceeds 😉 Rule of thumb: diameter of the rootball needs to be at least 6 times the diameter of the stem.
Great information, thank you.
Is it too late to dig up and move a small japanese maple? It hasn't leafed out yet but the buds are swelling, also was only planted in the fall about 6months ago. It's the end of March.
I'm curious what your thoughts are in root washing and trimming to transplant?
Such good advice and instruction on transplanting #japanesemaples! Thanks again guys for another amazing video.

I just planted a green acer that I purchased from a nursery. It was pretty root bound in its pot, and while I did cut some of the roots that were girdling, I think I should have done a better job. Is it ok to pull up the tree and fix this and replant it, or should I wait until fall? Thanks
Hi, Ok, I hate those cages…a few weeks ago I purchased a large seiryu that was in burlap and wire cage. I could ge t most of the cage off with bolt cutters but the bottom I could not detach the cage…I tried but it was just too much embedded in the rootball (3-4 inches). If one did get the cage off the bottom it would have destroyed the rootball. I also just purchased a Beni Otake the other day with burlap and cage, I told the nurseryman manager how difficult it was with the cage and asked him to take out of the cage and place it in a container. He wouldn't do it…and I've purchased many many trees there. If you desire large trees many will be in burlap and cages, I swore I wouldn't ever buy another with a cage but then you fall in love and do it again. If I owned the nursery I would accommodate the customer for $700 trees…this nursery has plenty of workers that I'm sure don't get paid a living wage and would be happy to transfer to the container. I'm grateful to have 2 nurseries that have a decent inventory of maples…unfortunately their service has a low standard.
Is it ok in february in Northeast, Ct since will have freezing temps as late as March, even april?
Lol, the tallest guy has the shortest shovel.
I have a Japanese maple about the same size and your video, I am relocating from my home to a new home, and would like to carry my tree with me. The question I have is it possible for me to transplant a tree that size into a large container for a year. Will it stop the growth of the tree which I really don’t want it bigger than what it is currently???? Thank you.
Happy Independence Day! 🎉🇺🇸🗽🎆
Two things I got from this video
Matt didn’t dig lol
And we need to buy a dirt hauler lol
Thank you for this great information. Needed to know just when to actually transplant.
What about up North in Western NY? What time of year should I do this here? My tree is pretty small. It was there when I moved in 3 years ago. But it has been stunted because of a large burning bush growing next to it.
Thank you, but what vitamin B is and in what form?
Fantastic video. Just what I need to know: Not too deep, do it in mid-February to early March (I'm in Idaho), just go wider with my digging, and keep that root ball intact. Really appreciate this, and you guys are a great team!
Great video but there's almost no music you can choose to fill the time that you're working instead of talking that doesn't become incredibly annoying after a while. Everybody chooses busy instrumental elevator music and either that or rock music so I would like to just suggest maybe not. But otherwise extremely helpful thank you
Thank you for this tutorial. I have a bloodgood that’s slightly planted deep. I’ve already removed the excess dirt but has a slight dip which I’m planning on digging up again & replant coming Spring. It’s on a slight incline.
I purchased a bloodgood maple a few days ago and had landscapers plant it in my front yard. It was full and bright but now the leaves look much darker and are starting to shrivel. Is this transplant shock? I’m worried I killed this thing! Please tell me I didn’t. It’s November 10th about 50 degrees and cloudy in Portland, OR.
What are your thoughts on cutting roots of a 20 yr old japanese maple? Someone placed a spigot too close to the tree and I want to to relocate the spigot. Roots I want to cut are a foot from the trunk, inch in diameter. Tree is 8-10' tall and 10" wide.
Great advice in this video. Thank you!
