Hey everyone!
Week seven, well, the garden didn’t get as much love as it should have this week, but luckily it rained, not only for the garden but for the bushfires as well, so everything is looking well!
An update on how the evacuation happened as well as some garden updates and just an overall tired chat!

Enjoy!
The website still has A LOT to go on it, there is a lot of dead links and empty space and even some ‘sample stuff’ from the template I bought, but if you’d like to look at how a sample recipe will look, here’s a link and feedback is always welcome 🙂

Didn’t know you had another fire scare. Glad you are all okay. Don’t stress about the videos, just look after yourselves. ❤️ Karen
Your home is your home doesn’t matter what it looks like it’s yours and your family’s safe place xx it’s a great Aussie’s spirit that in times of need we lend a hand and help when we can
So so so glad you’re all ok. You must’ve been SO happy to see your dogs got through it too.
Thank you for the tour. ❤
So hard to know what to take when evacuated but socks and underwear are super important for sure. Home cooked food would certainly be important for my family too. Glad you are home to your own beds and food. It does make you appreciate what you have in a much different way then normal life. Hope that you don’t have to evacuate again but now you have your many lessons to do it better. We have a smaller car so I have often thought we would not be able to fit things that we need but luckily we don’t have to evacuate for much.
Didn't manage to see the whole episode end to end but I'm happy you're all good and managing so greatly in the face of a disaster 😊
Regarding the zucchini, keep in mind we remove 90% of all male flowers, sometimes all of them and that's not a massive problem with fruit set. Seeing the peppers dropping fruit stems (yellow ones) and tomatoes having low fruit set with so much flowers, I'm thinking maybe it's a general pollinator problem. Which could make sense with the smoke, fire and all else. If our zucchini managed to get pollinated without any male flowers, means lots of pollinators activity probably bringing pollen from somewhere else.
Wow! You guys were really lucky! Someone was definitely watching over you all! Very scary for you all! It does make you appreciate your little piece of paradise! Not all would want our lifestyle, but I would hate to leave our place and go back to suburbia! Great neighbours you have! You'll have to have them over to enjoy your beautiful cooking!
Glad you are all safe xxx
So thankful y’all are safe and many thanks to your neighbors!!!
So happy to hear everything survived and you're all well!!!
I assume your state has a bushfire survival plan you can access to help you have prepacked bags etc. I would recommend having those bags packed from the end of winter all the way through until the end of fire season, we check through ours at the end of winter and swap out any food/meds to have fresh stuff in there (anything with a use by date). We live in TAS and have some excellent resources to help us plan to leave or plan to stay and defend. We have a big 60L tub (for 2 adults and 2 cats) packed at the garage door with everything we will need to leave and be gone for 3-4 days. That has been a massive reassurance for us knowing if we need to we can leave in minutes, the longest part will be getting the cats into their carriers and then throwing everything in the car. We purchased extras of clothes, socks and undies, toothbrushes, batteries for phone charging, torches, radio, cat things, meds, blankets, food etc all just for our go box so we know everything is always in there, we dont have to rely on the things we use daily and worry about if they make it into the box and we just got the cheapest stuff from kmart for most stuff, it just needs to get us through an emergency evacuation and nothing else. You could pick up a couple bits every time you go shopping instead of having this massive extra expense all in one go. Even just having somethings, like socks as you said, that are solely for evacuations will be one less stress.
The other thing is a fire tank, solely for fire fighting on your property. its a huge expense but I think the community you have here would certainly be willing to help raise some funds to have a fire fighting tank, pump and hose and have it filled, on your property so you can stay and defend, or have neighbours/friends come to defend while you evacuate the kids. No one wants to see anyone lose their home, that would be very devastating. That was another big thing we knew we wanted, living right next to a forestry we are in extreme risk area, but we were also legally required to do it for our building code when we applied for a permit to add a building to our property. we weren't allowed to make any changes or even get a permit until the fire tank was placed and filled, we dont have it filled off rain water or mains we just filled it up so its ready to go always (not something we budgeted for but very glad we have it now).
Thankful you were all safe, no damage to your property and you have amazing neighbours! Hopefully now you have a much calmer summer as the risk of burning across is lower, but still worrying about all the lush bush on your land. stay safe and vigilant!
That is a lot to deal with Nyssa. Hope you are finding some time to rest and reset.
Perhaps you could make a "competition" game with two children of similar age; the challenge would be to see who could pick up the most bags from the garden paths in a one minute countdown. The winner could have extra screen time or an extra ice cream treat?!?!?
Glad to hear you are back and everything was saved. I'm sure everyone will understand if you don't reply / acknowledge I'm sure most of us just sent messages to say 'thinking of you'
please take care and watch over yourselves. sending prayers from Bonnie Scotland xxx
please don't think of us, you and your family comes first
I'm glad you are safe, but I've been very concerned for you. Idk how you are dealing with that smoke. This summer we live near the Canadian border and they had raging fires for months. Our air quality was terrible so Im in amazement at how you guys are dealing with the smoke alone. If you lose what you have, just know we will be there as you rebuild. As long as u guys are okay!
The easiest way to grow zucchini, cucumber, or anything you want to grow vertically is to grow them against the fence. They want to climb and will cover the fence themselves without any intervention 😊
Spray MINT essential oil spray on the zucchini, or anything mice or rats are eating. They hate mint
After you stop the rats, it's very easy to hand pollinate zucchini & squash. I pick one male flower and get just the stamen, then gently open all female flowers and brush it up against the middle opening. Works well every time. My plants produce tons like this. You can teach the kids to do it easily too. Just be gentle. Whether the flower itself has closed or isn't quite open yet doesn't matter to me. I gently open it and pollinate it. It works 😊
You’re so lucky Nyssa! We had fires recently too. You do know how to prepare better once you’ve been through it though. Glad you’re all fine. How annoying about the rats.
Glad you all are safe…
How very scary for you. I was thinking, when you are in the head space, could you do more indepth about your lessons from the fire…and another question…the workload you have , is it more than you thought it would be
So glad you're all ok. We're here for you.
Definitely get those dogs boxes done ..
Its still a long hot summer to come and you are right the firies will not be there to try and save 1 or 2 houses…they cant save everything
Glad that you are all safe 😊
I have tried strawberries 🍓 many times and have had no luck i live in a dry arid area and i have a filtered sun area with only morning sun and so far my strawberries
Are doing well
Damn rats! 😡
I have the same issue with blossom and rot with my paste tomatoes for this year…. Its a really pain in the backside!! (Ipswich QLD)
I’m so glad to hear you and your family are all safe. The garden is doing great. Take each day as it comes, it’s all a person can do. Take care!
