Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I’ve seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

Thanks Ron we all can stand to look at and reflect on things that most of us have at sometime or another are not proud of, and let the story play out and hopefully we will find out what really happened and those people are sorry for what happened.
Love listening to your podcast. I've always enjoyed hunting. For many years where I live we were only allowed to hunt dear and bear with shotgun slug. Even after being allowed to use rifle I still used shotgun and had to pass up many dear that were out of range. I think that was training for me to be aware of my limitations even with a rifle now that I've had one for a while. Even here with limited sight distance (400 yd max) I see ones shoot past their limitations. I hope that I always remember this and don't let excitement rule me. So easy to let that happen. Again I really enjoy your podcast.
Ron I wathced to see what you had to say about Aram VB. You said it well, you didn't lecture us and yet you spoke like a gentleman of principles. Too much anger and vituperation out there these days. What Aram did is between him the other hunter and God. and perhaps F&G Dept.
I dunno Ron, if think ur just fine. Our Prez is goofy 🤪
The " evil twin " defence i should have seen that coming😂
Your man of honor and respect in a gossip age. Thank you Ron
I can't understand why a person who may not like you style Ron would say negative things about you . The internet and social media has allowed for allot of folks to become unnecessary and blatently ignorant and arrogant . I personally think you are excellent at what you do while trying to be kind and understanding to all. We can't please everyone I guess. CHEERS!
Another vote for Ron. I like the presentations.
The Lead Sled issue is real but is not limited to stock damage, it can also affect the scope and rings. There are several accounts of the recoil energy shifting, or dislodging, the crosshairs. I've personally seen slide marks on the scope from it shifting through the rings. Yes, improper torque is possible, but not likely. It probably wouldn't have shifted being fired from the shoulder.
My Father never hunted with anything but a 22 magnum bolt action rifle, with open sights. I've watched him take 200 yard shots on Deer and he never lost one. Sometimes they'd drop where they stood, and sometimes they'd run 50, 75 to 100 yards and lay down. 10 minutes later we'd walk over find them dead. He took some with headshots and some with heart/lung shots.
Ron gave the perfect comment. "Think twice, or four times". Perfectly said Sir!
I agree with you about the issue 100% Ron. None of us have any business accusing anyone in that incident because we weren’t there. What we are supposed to do is learn from these things to add to our own hunting ethics. Nobody’s perfect. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to be.
Thank you Ron for offering a voice of reason to the blathering "ethics mongers" who condemn shots taken at distances beyond what they might or might not shoot as unethical or worse. None of the detractors have the facts, nor do they care about them. Social media platforms have given them the wherewithal to condemn, vilify, and indict based solely on what they have read, or heard that conforms with their own biases and prejudices…nothing else.
What's really sad is that they are okay with that instead of admitting they don't know what happened, how or why the situation unfolded as it did, but to hell with all of that. All that matters is they now can parrot the negative towards someone else; particularly if the other guy's opinion is contrary to theirs!
Ron, Your 1/3 second is spot on especially the new straight wall cartridges. Most around 2100, that relates to 700 FPS in .33 sec. however it’s not going 2100 the entire distance of say a 150 yd shot, it has not traveled 700 ft or in 1/3 sec. I have had 3 instances where in the case of .44 magnum at 115 yards the deer moved forward as I was squeezing the trigger and the impact was a spine shot behind the shoulder. I have also had similar results a greater than 150 with .350 Legend. Aiming Point being high shoulder for dropping on impact. When bow hunting years ago shots at 25-35 yards always aimed low and forward as the deer always crouched and lunged at arrow release. I never lost a hit deer as I used my Siberian as a tracker. Over shooting at distances not practice is unethical at best. After spending thousands on equipment, and hunting arrangements, and licenses why would you not have ranger finder and find a place where you can set up the farthest ethical shot you’re capable of taking. Like others I appreciate your perspective and light hearted when sharing time in your podcast. Recognizing the need for schooling for long range hunting is certainly a winning combination. Physical exposure and experience trumps reading and watching videos ALONE as your ONLY source for the HUNT OF A LIFETIME GUIDELINES. Keep us informed, laughing, and participating, for future generations.
Also, people need to leave Aram alone. Too many people casting stones without all of the facts….
Aram should have been a gentleman and let the lady have it either way. He is the so called professional / expert and understand he will have plenty of opportunities to get another. He really messed up and should just apologize at this point.
Ron, you are a class act as always!
Lead sleds are useless and are just crutches for rifles the user can’t shoot or control
If you can’t shoot it at home you can’t shoot it with a living being on the other side when it matters
love ya Ron👍
Ron, when you were explaining maximum point blank range it seemed to remind me of an article I saw many years ago by (I think) Jim Carmichael. It was called the non-thinking man's trajectory table. I kept it for many years, but sadly loaned it out and lost it. Always enjoy your podcasts and videos. Very informative and entertaining.
No more apology vdeos sir. Haters gonna hate. Keep up the great work 👍
Ron, your narrative on the suspected non ethical hunters is spot on. I don't believe anyone could have said it better. That was exactly right and perfectly said.
Steel targets usually don't move at 700 yards but game animals do. Enough said
I really respect how you handled the Aram Von Benedict issue, well said.
Would love to see some hunting videos with Covey? Or is the dog named Cubby?
Ron the problem with the whole "i wasn't there" song and dance is that with the liars these days there would never be consequences for poor a actions like this… he has admitted to enough to face scrutiny for his actions and it only matters that people have an unpopular opinion of him because he makes money off of peoples opinion of him… sorry but he needs not be a representative of the hunting community any longer!
The 9.3 x57 is a beautiful caliber that most know very little about. Ŵith modern powders this cartridge produces the early 9.3×62 ballistics. With a 250gr nosler accubond this is beast.the real beauty is the rifle this cartridge arrives in
The Husqvarna 46 is amazing. It is light and handles like a high-end custom rifle .I ɓought mine for 335 dollars and have never spent my money better. I bought One in 8mm Mauser also.both are 96 Mauser not 98 mausers.the 96 mausers are not weak actions, just not as strong as 98.great work Ron. The Husqvarnas were bought from Simpson Ltd
Lead sleds also mess with the barrel harmonics, so the group you’re seeing down range isn’t the true group or point of impact that you’ll see on the field.
Love your videos Ron
You're a class act Ron. I cringed when I saw the video title, because I didnt want to see bad feedback on you. But you approached the subject in great manner. Aram doesnt look good in any version of the story, but calls on you to condemn him are a bigger problem than the subject. Demands to support all these digital lynch mobs, with their "if you're not with us you're against us" mentality, is a sad symptom of a society out of touch with true human interaction. (Tough digital voices make people forget how they would/should actually speak with strangers like they would face to face). Approaching everything with humilty and self awareness is a lesson sooo many people need to learn. Good on ya for keeping it classy Ron!
Regarding lead sleds and heavy recoiling big bores, if they can’t move backward, they can move upward! Your cheek can feel like you’re in a fight and took a hard right cross!
Bloodshot, or bloody meat can be soaked in saltwater overnight to eliminate that metallic taste. Just be sure to rinse the meat before and after. It helps a lot.
I shoot my 300 weatherby out of a led sled and I've had no problem.
Soke your meat in Cold water and it will take a lot of the blud out of your meat.
18 minutes in, I feal as if I was a teenager, and just got a lecture from uncle Ron at a camp fire when I ran my mouth off. (Well said Mr. Spooner)
Good video
If it wasn't a girl few would care and he damn sure wouldn't have lost his job for one incendent like this…unreal
Also a YOUNG couple in this scenario on blood trail being shot towards ( if they were trailing the buck ) you telling me of the TWO of them neither had at least phones recording much less go pro…really dude comes up on em having shot same monster and one of em doesn't pull out a phone tk video really? Naw some is off here
Ron preaches ethics but when his dik buddy aram does it Ron sucks his kak on YouTube like he's done no wrong
Dude…where did you get that gun…a 500 yard .22??? Where can I get one?
Just ribbing you…I am late to the party and just wanted to get mine in!
MPBR is not complicated but little understood. To your point, quicker for shooting up to MPBR but also requires much less “dialing” when stretching the legs!
Great video content…as usual!
Ron,
I’m disappointed by your obviously veiled support of Aram. How could an experienced hunter steal from this young mother. He should have let them follow the blood trail. And, then helped pack it out. That would have been a great story in Outdoor life. But, instead he has been outed as a bully, and his career is in ruins.
