Have lawns in California been disparaged unfairly? Grass absorbs greenhouse gas and converts it into life-giving oxygen. It does this at a much higher rate than native plants because grass has a higher leaf density and a faster growth rate. A 2500-square-foot lawn converts enough carbon dioxide into oxygen to sustain a family of four! Grass also absorbs particulates and some of the worst atmospheric pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and ozone.

In this episode, we discuss the problems or potential of lawns in California with John Domenici from Southland Sod.

  1. Great topic for discussion. Learned so much as I recently added turf to the backyard.
My home had artificial turf from the previous home owner for water saving and I disliked the darn thing. It was good quality but I still felt like it was an outdoor carpet. Also, with 1 dog, it stunk so bad from the urine that I constantly had to clean and water it down. I now have turf and love it. I have so much wild life in the yard. Here in Livermore, CA; In Zone 9b, the water needs is between 2-5 mins every other day in the summer…it’s a small patch. In short, artificial turf is not good for our eco system and it cannot be recycled so great tip from discussion to research the pros and cons. 👍
