Easier when you have control of weeds, see my other videos for advice on that with no dig.
I show the two main types of bulbs, plus elephant garlic which is not a ‘true garlic’ and tastes of leek.
Dates here apply to zones approx. 6-10, I am zone 8.
Garlic is prone to rusty leaves and see how I manage to reduce rust. Harvest early rather than late and I show why.
I show an easy way of storing garlic for many months of use.

  1. I grew garlic outdoors from supermarket garlic… Looked at the veriety on the label before I bought them and they did really well… It took about 1 year to form a bulb though but they look really nice… I planted them in areas of the garden I don't use due to being a poor location for veg (near the hedge rows).

  2. Excellent video! I grow the hardneck variety. I usually dig a trench and add worm castings and plant. Add more compost on top, no fertilizers ever, I do mulch with shredded leaves to protect in our harsh winters. I do get great looking garlic,, but you've convinced me here to use a dibber. Seems easier and less disturbance to the soil life .

  3. Hi Charles, in the attempt to avoid garlic rust I bought early variety garlic from the garlic farm, I’m still not sure when we’re supposed to plant it, even their website says to plant anywhere from September to December so I planted mine on the 21st of September, Autumn solstice! I gather the idea is to get the cloves rooted and the the cold helps the bulb formation and makes them dormant and they spring back into action next season but, my garlic is already 8 inches tall so not sure whether that’s a good thing or not or what the ideal date to plant is. Any advice would clear this up for me ? 😬 Regards

  4. I am happy that the garlic I planted a month ago is now growing well and putting down roots. I am wondering that the warm weather has confused them and there is more growth than there should be by this time of the year.

  5. 1.5 years ago today I started your no dig project in my garden and I’m pleasantly impressed by the progress. as you say fewer weeds in the beds, I went down to the garden and expected to spend more more than an hour on weeding and I only spent 30 minutes on the beds im now asking myself why didn’t do this before why dig its so much easier than digging up the soil… thank you for your advice on the garden

  6. I thought that alliums couldn't be planted near asparagus? I did a bit of research on companion planting before setting my asparagus bed, and several sites say that alliums will stunt asparagus growth, or vice versa. Did that elephant garlic do anything to your asparagus production there? Obviously the elephant garlic was just fine!

  7. I am seeing rust in my garlic which I planted outdoors in November last year. The stalks are pretty thick so I’m hoping they’ll hold out till at least mid-May, hopefully June. Should I remove all the damaged leaves?

  8. I honestly couldn't tell you the varieties that I grow, I have kept the same seeds for years and years. So any that store well and are a good size i use for the next years sowing, so goodess knows which they are, they end to be a mix of bulbs, i have also grown elephant garlic

  9. I have taken to now only growing autumn sown Elephant Garlic as it doesn't seem to suffer from rust, the yield is massive and it stores very well.

  10. I live in Dumfries southern Scotland. If I plant in October I loose most of the bulbs to rot as the sub soil is clay and the ground becomes waterlogged, even though I have improved the drainage and it's a raised bed. Is it worth planting in pots in the conservatory and then moving the plants into position in the spring?

  11. Hello from Wisconsin USA. I've learned so much from you. I love all your books. Thank You.

  12. First time growing garlic. We bought them as tiny plants in spring. Think we should look to be harvesting them.
Thanks for info on harvest and storing garlic. We have been very disappointed with shop bought stuff. It doesn’t last long at all.
    Thanks for sharing.

  13. Thank you Charles, I've had trouble with mold in the soil and on garlic.
Love the visit to your garden.

  14. Hey Charles, got a question regarding plating garlic. I'm in zone 5B and I planted my garlic bulbs October 10th. However, they have sprouted and now have about 5" shoots popping up. Should I just mulch over the green tops for winter? Or should I wait till the first hard freeze to kill the tops then mulch over?
