In today’s video we look at growing Ivy Gourd, which is not only a delicious vegetable to grow, but is extremely . The Scientific Name for Ivy Gourd is Coccinia grandis. It is also known by different names like: Scarlet gourd, Tindora, Tondli, Kowai, Kunduri, Kovakkai etc.
Medicinal benefits of Ivy Gourd or Tindora include: Rich source of Vitamin C, Great source of Beta Carotene, and micronutrients, cell-stabilizing, antianaphylactic, and antihistaminic potential.
Ivy gourd prefers humid, warm weather, 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
Ivy gourd tastes like cucumber. Its very delicious and here is a recipe for you:
Ingredients:
3 cups chopped ivy gourd
2 tbsp oil
2 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp turmeric powder
2 tsp chilly powder
salt, as needed
1 cup water
Method:
1. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds till they sputter
2. Add the chopped ivy gourd
3. Add turmeric powder, chilly powder and salt and sautee for 2-3 minutes
4. Add 1 cup water and stir. Cook covered for 8-10 minutes
5. Open the pan and roast till light brown
Serve with rice or tortilla.
Another similar vegetable is Parwal, Trichosanthes dioica , also known as kambupudalai, paror, green potato or pointed gourd. Its very different from Tindora or Ivy gourd and we explain the differences in the video.
