How an Architect Renovated and Modernised Their Own Mid-Century Home

Architect Wilko Doehring of Wilko Architecture, embarked on a journey to revive a mid-century modern home in Beaumaris. The 3-bedroom property had suffered a 1970s medieval makeover, which led to the loss of its original character.

Wilko decided on a sympathetic renovation, focusing on energy efficiency and contemporary updates. The floor plan remained mostly unchanged, but a wall separating the kitchen and dining area was removed. Insulation and a vapour barrier enhanced the home’s energy efficiency, with 27 solar panels added.

Materials were carefully selected to create cohesion, combining modern touches with a nod to the home’s mid-century roots, reflecting the Australian style that came after decades of dark Victorian homes.

    I love mid-century and I like that the home is light-filled and bright. So much now is dark and grey (moody) on the inside…not very uplifting, imho.

    A lovely home, and a great way to modernise without destruction. I lived next door to them for a while, and the house looked and felt right, it is a beach house.
