I understand that pereskiopsis is know to be a temporary stock. Some of mine are coming up on 1-1.5 years old. I’ve had some reach eol and I’ve degrafted and rooted the scions.

I’m not quite ready to degraft some, the unions are strong but the base near the soil has already turned grey and woody. Some are still a healthy green half way up the stems.

Can I cut into the softer green stem and re-root the pere to extend the life a bit longer? Some are just too top heavy and I’d like to chop and re-root.

Has anybody done this or have similar experiences using other stocks?

I’ve already done this to a few and am waiting on them to root, just curious if someone else has past experiences to share.

If you want to extend the longevity of the pere you need to let it pup and then trim that new branch below the height of the graft to ensure that that majority of the plant hormones are being sent to the graft. Don’t let it go crazy or anything but definitely new branches, new leaves once vigor starts to diminish.
