In a nutshell, thinking strategically is a thinking process applied by an individual with the goal of achieving success in ‘said’ project, for example in this case, a garden or allotment. It means looking at the bigger picture and how all the individual elements work together and how they affect each other.

Here are the simple steps when it comes to strategic thinking, which in itself is linked to a permaculture principle of observe and interact and you will see why. And then I will use some of my examples in this garden so you can see how it works:

• Step 1 – Have an understanding of your garden, this means you need to have at least 2-3 years of knowledge of the garden, over this time you will know things like the most sheltered spot and sunniest corner for example.
• Step 2 – Identify what went wrong, things that require a lot of effort, or things which don’t seem to match up. You may not realise it but every time you are in the garden you could be doing something which takes extra unneeded effort or time.
• Step 3 – Once you have identified a potential problem or barrier, you then need to put together a solution.

Strategic thinking is basically like spending half a day of sitting down and thinking to save you 5 days through the year. It is a measure twice cut once approach, which will greatly increase efficiency and productivity
