Here’s a product we found which can help for things like erosion control, or gardening on a slope. They’re called Dirt Lockers. We have very sloped land here in Zone 10a California. They have different sized lockers depending on how sloped your property is. These are the large dirt lockers. They have an estimator tool that will help you decide what you need. Here’s an install video.

On the dirt locker site they tell you not to just landscape fabric because it keeps the plants you install from root growing deep into the hillside.
Very tacky
Thank you very much I love this video.
Thank you so much for this video. I was going to ask what size dirt lockers you used, but I saw in the description box that you used the Large. Thanks guys, great job and thanks for the tip on doing your own rebar đ
I've been searching the internet for research on the dirt lockers cuz my husband has about had it trying to put these things in place on our very steep slope.
The plastic weed âclothâ literally defeats the purpose of dirt lockers helping prevent erosion of hillside because the roots of the plants need to grow deep in the hillside and spread out.
The only possible way to kinda make it work would be to stab decent sized holes in it below where u put the plants and use plants that spread out and go deep for one plant.. like a some trees, bushes, etc.. or maybe plant multiple things to create a better future root system in each terrace.
In the future thereâs a few great tricks for âweedsâ. One is to order truck(s) full (cheaper than bags) of wood chips/wood mulch and it will block weeds from growing around ur desired plants.. it varies on the depth needed to block weeds, 3â-6â and instead of more plastic in the world youâve actually created a time release of wood turning into compost which will feed the fungi and bacteria needed for a super healthy soil and it helps keep in the moisture which is so needed in california which helps save on the water bill. Thereâs tons of videos showing u how to, best deals, pros, cons.
Another option is to plant something that grows faster than the âweedsâ and will either smother the weeds or create so much shade it fully blocks the sunlight and they die off.
If you donât want to spend more money in the future for ur other sloping areas you can create swells which is free and helps restore the groundwater when it rains (a huge issue in ca is we donât retain a majority of rain and it washes away and/or evaporates). It will help stop erosion if u plant the proper plants and will be minimal to no maintenance if you use permaculture (bill mollison, Geoff Lawton are great teachers on YouTube).
Good luck on ur planting journey. Look forward to seeing ur progress
Hi guys, thanks for the vid. Could you do a short video showing more clearly how you bend the rebar. It would be very much appreciated, Thanks
Thank you for showing in detail your locker installation, especially rebar diy. Would love to see an update on how your dirt locker garden is doing.
Why have land to cover in black plastic? You are killing the ground. You need a big house small garden….its gonna look like a huge mulch field…and guess what…weeds will grow in your mulch eventually if you dont weed it or keep topping it with more mulchđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł so youre making an expensive mulch gardenđ
could we get an update on this? đ
