Yes your root is rotten. Anything below where there a string holding it together is dead. Is the root soft? Wherever it feels firm, keep it but the whole bottom part must be removed asap.

just soak the whole thing top most of stem where it’s black and root on down in peroxide 1:1 with water 30 minutes
Then remove it cut all the root off with new razor blade leave only 1/2” and cut past the very last of the blackening on stem 1/2” and if there is not black inside the cut cool
Let it callous over 18-24 hours somewhere cool and dark
Then after the callous over time you can place it into water ONLY deep enough that the root is in water which means it should be sitting as sideways as possible really so no stem but that bottom most section is in water
Sanitized container , clean fresh water room temperature barely lukewarm which means just not cold and barely cool still yet ‘luke’warm not actual warm at all tbh
Place it near an east window in a clear container change water out any time u see it looking cloudy at all
Once u see the white tip forming at the end of the 1/2” aerial your in bizness root is about to grow and grow and grow and branch out
