The rocks in my drain wash away to the grate when we get a heavy rain. I’ve tried piling some of the larger ones at the end but I can’t seem to stop them from washing away while still maintaining good water flow.
They’re too small. You need larger rocks or they will indeed wash away.

I have a drain like that in my back yard. I lifted the grate up, put down some 1/4 hardware cloth cut the the right size, then put the grate back down. This prevents leaves, rocks, and other debris from entering the drain.

Mesh on the grate for short term.

Don’t use river rock as it won’t lock into place. Instead, use limestone or similar that is available in your area – stone with angular sides that will much better lock with one-another. Use large washed stone – maybe 2 to 3 inches or slightly larger. You’ll have much better success. But know that the larger stone probably needs to be put in place with a machine or by hand (literally) – they don’t work well with a shovel or rake.

Spray a coat of clear Flex Seal over it.

Use larger cobblestone, 6”-10” should do the trick.

Much bigger rocks around the perimeter of the pile.

You can buy mulch glue and it’ll work the same with those rocks.
There’s plenty of TikToks showing such.

River rock is rounded from being slid around other rocks and lots of silt and sand and … like glacial till. You’ve got rock marbles, my dude. Happy rocks. Rocks a toddler could boop their way across barefoot and giggle.
Get some *not* smooth rocks. Gravelly rocks. Angry looking rocks. Rocks that will look at your heavy rain and give it the middle finger.
