Looking for some suggestions or guidance on what to do with my driveway which is currently small gravel on a bed of heavily compacted earth (I think), and has been for decades. It gets extremely muddy and in the winter (West coast of Scotland) it becomesb like a mud slide. I’m thinking about layering up:
Weed membrane
Type 1/hardcore
Sharp sand
Pebbles/gravel

Anyone got experience with a sloped curved driveway they could offer assistance please?

Layer from small to large from sand to crushed gravel. Sloped on both sides for drainage

  2. Layer from larger rocks to small gravel. Mound slightly in the center with ditches on each side for water runoff. Learn how roads are made.

Have you thought about just paving the road, instead of fixing it or sliding around in the mud?

  4. If it is on a slope sand and small gravel will wash out easily.

If the right side of your driveway is the low side it needs to be below your driveway so the driveway naturally will drain that direction

I have about 1000 yards gravel drive to get to my house. If you can find anyone with a box-scrape, it makes an amazing difference. Loosening up the packed dirt and allowing the gravel to re-settle on top makes it look like new (without bringing in new gravel.)
