My first year gardening and I grew like 10 giant watermelons. It’s been a learning experience but first few were pinkish, then I learned to properly pick them and got sweet red ones. (A couple had brown spots near the seeds too) So I brought some watermelons to work that I cut that morning and my boss INSISTS that we can’t open it bc I just cut it off the vine that day and we have to wait 4 days for the skin to “release the flavor” … never heard of this before and tried to Google it.. nothing..

Never heard that, we have never done it with the ones that we raised, I have a friend in Maryland who raises about 400 acres every year, and he always cuts into them right out of the field
Nope. Never heard of that. My granddaddy used to walk out in the field, pick a melon and bring back and cut right then and there. Very nice on a hot southern July day after weeding the garden.
I think it was about 20 minutes from harvest to dissection on our last one
Never heard of aging them four days. The rule I heard is to knock on the melon, an unripe melon will have a dull sound, a ripe one will have more of a full sound. Seems to work.
Since we are talking about watermelons, how do I know when they are ready to harvest?
You need to let the watermelon rest for 5 minutes after it’s done so it can reabsorb the juices
If my 4 days you mean 4 minutes… then sure 😛
My grandma grew up dirt-poor on a farm back in the 1920s. She used to tell me all sorts of stories one of which was about her and the other kids going into the field, choosing a watermelon, busting it open right there and chowing down.
Don’t wait!
I’ve cut them immediately and they were delicious
