I am hopeless when it comes to gardening. But I do at least try to keep my lawn tidy.
Since we moved into our house 3 years ago, this plant has been in a corner of the lawn. But now it’s started spreading. When I mow it, it leaves a little of the stalk which is much harder than the leaves. I’d love to get rid of it, but I don’t know what it’s called so I can’t even google solutions!
I’m in London, in case the plant is native to the area. The turf in my garden is clay.

How tall is it?

I might be wrong about the exact species but it’s a weed grass. I’m gonna guess its Yorkshire fog. If it were my lawn I’d cut it within a mm of its life, then cover the whole lawn in a thick layer of 70/30 tops dressing and re seed it with 100% dwarf perennial rye grass. Will look amazing in 3 weeks and it’s hard wearing too.

Dug tons out, I think it’s couchgrass

Did you try to let it grow longer so you can pull it?

Think it’s millet. Relative has this in their garden, who kept budgies and used to blow off the empty seed husks outside. Really difficult to get rid of without strong weedkiller.
