Hello,

I’ve got a 3/4 acre yard in Zone 8, and I already have Leyland cypress trees around half of the perimeter. I’m looking for recommendations on other tree species that would thrive in this climate and complement the existing greenery. I wouldn’t mind if the back half of the yard were just full of trees.

Here are the key details:
– Location: Zone 8.
– Soil: Clay.
– Sunlight: Full sun.
– Purpose: Shade and ornamental trees are both welcome.

I’m open to various tree types but need them to thrive in Zone 8 alongside Leyland cypress trees. Any suggestions or tips are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Plátanos Mexicana, good shade tree. Fast growing, I planted one on the west side of the house and it’s growing good.

Western arborvitae and western red cedar would be a nice addition. Arborvitae don’t provide much shade but are good looking ornamental trees. Have to be careful of bagworms however

Please update because that would be awesome. You have so much space you could plant anything really. A mix of evergreens and deciduous trees would be great.

Arbor Day has a search tool by zip code that can offer some suggestions.

Fwiw, in my area, those Cypresses are prone to mite damage so keep an eye on them.
