In today’s Wednesday Walkabout, I share some of my favorite groundcover ideas. They are not only a wonderful replacement and alternative to lawn, but are also an important member of the entire garden team. They add texture and color and dimension… and invaluable practical qualities! #groundcovers #lawnalternatives #gardenideas #frontyard

  1. I love my ajuga! It grows in full sun, shade and everything in between! They’re easy to pull out when they get out of hand.

  2. Your new garden has done so well, and weathered the storm of heat, new plantings, and yet proven, you can enjoy a brand new landscaping, even as young as yours.
My heart has been so full with, the release of 229 Monarchs so far, released into my garden of so many wonderful flowers for them to dine on.

  3. Good Morning and HURRAY!! You have waited for your windows and today you get your wish! LOVE to hear your early morning greeting voice!!

  4. Hi Linda, Aussie Girl here 🇦🇺💕! Just wanted to know why you haven’t planted ,Erigeron/Seaside Daisys…so Petite little flowers…. ? I’m sure you must be able to grow it their, I grow it in Queensland, where we have very HOT Summers. It’s very complimentary to a Mediterranean themed Garden… btw-You are My Garden Guru! Much Love to you & Stewart. 😍💕🙏💕

  5. I'd give the roses another chance, see how they are next spring, cut them back and fertilize them well, maybe interplant with something that will protect their roots? 💚

  6. Comment 3 😘 You've probably thought about this, but extra drip above on that steep little hill 💚

  7. I grow lavender here in my zone 4b. I dig a deep trench fill the bottom with gravel (a couple of inches) then add soil, this aids in the lavender not having wet feet. I then plant my rows of lavender, previously I did not do this and my lavender did not flourish. Since doing this it is very abundant and flowers profusely. Hope you can try this and have the wonderful beauty and fragrance to enhance your already beautiful garden…❤

  8. Your new social patio furniture really complement your garden and blend in so much better. Good going.

  9. This is my favorite style of your different videos. Quiet, simple, and informative. This is what caught my attention when I first started watching you. Just you and your love for your plants & home.

  10. I love these informative, friendly walks with you on Wednesday’s. Thanks so much for sharing your love and knowledge of creating beautiful spaces.

  11. I plant my Drift Roses all season and they are small still but blooming. I find when I plant on a slope things don’t do well because of the run off.

  12. I'm sure plants that may look a bit haggard after such heat will prosper next year. Those roots are doing their thing. I finally planted 3 'Blue Kazoo' spirea I bought in June (delay due to huge project!). They look terrible, one may be dead, but in the ground it went.
I love ajuga. One I have waiting in the shadier wings rebloomed!
Do you have sedum in the garden? I have a couple prostrate-form varieties that are excellent ground covers. One is from the Sunsparkler series, 'Plum Dazzled' (I think) and it's now blooming. I've watched the foliage darken to nearly black and now the blooms are magenta or fuchsia? Covered in pollinators.
'Rozanne' geranium is my favorite ground cover and I love how it weaves itself among the other purple plants. I'm looking forward to editing my garden next season as more established plants thrive. Tulip order coming.
I heard your noisy crickets. My grandmother would say they announce cooler weather. I hope so. In Minneapolis area, they've been quite raucous, even drove me indoors because of their noise.
I've got a few shrubs in mind I want to move when cooler weather is steady. My 'Coralberry' always gets attention…in my back yard. I have 3 in various spots. One that hasn't performed as well as the others will get more sun in the front yard.
Btw, I love the calmness of your Wednesday Walkabout videos.

  13. Totally agree the red and orange red plants will make b enter Mach. Can't wait, to see the changes ❤

  14. Pretty garden.
Read the newsletter and you asked about Barbie movie. It is definitely a movie I won’t see. I’ll stick to my old thoughts and memories about Barbie. First appeared in 1959, my birth year. 😀

  15. Linda I so enjoy your videos with garden tips.

Can you tell me the name of the low growing salvia that you love?😊
It looks like there is a pink and blue/purple.

  16. Enjoyed the overview of your beautiful garden. What are the interesting multi trunk trees on the east side of the garden? They are very attractive. Enjoyed seeing the monarch fluttering through your garden. We are seeing a few here in the Great Lakes.

  17. Thanks for the video; I’m amazed at how your yard has done since planting a few months ago. Looks great!
I used to have 100’s of roses and they were in full sun all day in temps over 100 most of all four seasons. They need lots of fertilizer even in high temps. I also had better performance from my Rose Bushes than the ground cover roses. I look forward to learning your ground cover rose solutions.
    Blessings,
    L

  18. I once pulled out a small Nandina and decided to never plant one again, it was next to impossible to remove. But perhaps many shrubs are the same in that regard?

  19. Linda, halfway through the video, I was inspired to go outside and transplant ajuga. We have had a couple of cool days in SW Indiana, so the timing was perfect.

  20. In The Atlantic Magazine. DON’T OVERTHINK GARDENING
You don’t need a massive garden and a green thumb. Just put a pit in a pot.

  21. So few have failed to flourish in spite of new roots and vicious temperatures. I am impressed!

  22. Just a beautiful site .Linda when time permits see the tall, hardy, drought tolerant spikey non clumping Salvias at High Country Gardens.

  23. I just love your new home and garden Linda! I was scrolling through the comments and love how well you respond to the snarky comments. I love that you keep everything real and show us the good and the bad. Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden with us. 😘

  24. Your garden is such an inspiration. You have mentioned previously that you use liquid fertilizer for your container flowers and window box; may I ask what your feeding schedule is? Do you simply follow the instructions on the package, or do you feed more frequently with a more dilute ratio of fertilizer and water? I am trying to keep my containers going a little longer through the fall (zone 6 Atlantic Canada). I have been fertilizing every few weeks, but it has been quite rainy and cool and I suspect I haven’t been feeding enough.
