If you’re in Seattle, get your free tree here: [https://spu.surveymonkey.com/r/VN9D5KP](https://spu.surveymonkey.com/r/VN9D5KP) – If you want a “street” tree, they open up applications in July next year (2024). They do the work of approving your site.
Other cities do this. Just doing a Google search for Los Angeles, I found this: [https://www.cityplants.org/](https://www.cityplants.org/)
In Seattle, they even deliver your trees for free, with mulch and a watering bag. The only rub is you need to attend a free workshop so that you know how to care for it. (Once you plant it, you need to water it, etc.) They aren’t all ‘native’ necessarily but are designed to grow in our environment.
Again, your town might have a similar program. If not, they are often “Conservation District” sales which the government provides bare root trees or similar for low cost. (These are often plugs or immature trees which require a bit more care to grow to full size.)
