Hi! I just purchased witch hazel virginiana variety online, but upon receiving the plants am wondering if they are another cultivar/variety. First, the site listed their mature size as 8-10 feet tall and wide, but now I am reading online the size is actually closer to 15-20 feet tall and wide for virginiana, and this plant has some red tinged leaves. Anyone have any thoughts on if this is truly Hamamelis virginiana and if not, what it may be? Thank you!

Hmm I’m not sure on the id but I can say it’s normal for new plant growth to be red or purple sometimes. My hazelnuts put out red growth that eventually turns green.

Pretty much a dead ringer for *Hamamelis virginiana*. I can’t find a good comparison pic to show you because nobody ever feels like putting sapling pictures on the internet, annoyingly, but I’m like 99.9% certain. Leaf color can be influenced by a lot of things. It’s possible that this plant was in a greenhouse and hasn’t acclimated to seasonal changes yet.
