1. Is this expected progress for 4 months? I am in love with it. Will it grow at all over Autumn/Winter? Not sure whether to get grow lights or not.

2. Repoted onto an orchid pot the other week (with added perlite and bark) as the roots were coming out the bottom like crazy. It’s now drying out a bit faster than it was before. Is this good? Should I leave it dry for some time before watering? Should I be adding some moss on top? Also.. Will roots come out the side?

3. It had an arial root coming out and nicely pointed towards the soil. There was a clump of soil blocking it’s passage so I moved it and now the tip and underside of the root is black 🙁 why does this happen? How can I prevent this next time?

    1. Thai Cons are known to be slow growers; mine tends to put out a new leaf every 4-6 weeks, it sits under a grow light for 12 hours a day, and gets fertilized with every other watering.
Growth will slow down even more so over the winter, so if you want to augment with grow lights, she’ll definitely appreciate the extra light, but it’s not totally necessary. You will have to account for less light, which will mean watering less frequently!

    2. Chunky, airy potting mixes are PERFECT for these guys, as they’re quite prone to root rot. If you feel like it’s drying out too quickly though, it is okay to make the mix a bit denser, or put her in a pot with less airflow. Again, just monitoring for any signs of distress.

    3. It’s possible that the aerial root was resting against wet media for too long, but it’ll be just fine as long as the rest of the roots still look white/ tan and are firm to the touch. With rot, the roots will be dark, mushy, and fall apart easily as well as smell horrendous, so definitely keep an eye out since you did repot her recently.

    4. Such a beautiful baby! Keep us updated with her growth, I can’t wait to see what she looks like when she starts fenestrating!
