I live in a new construction house near the water and had zoysia sod installed in March and it’s done fairly well (could be better). I have no irrigation and move my standing sprinkler each night. The sprinkler can cover ~1/3 of the lawn so it basically gets watered every 3 days, effectively. Got a soil test done at the beginning of the summer and basically it’s 100% sand underneath the sod which was fill for the lot. I’ve used my terrible Scott’s spreader to fertilize twice now, which watching the green-up is always fun but doesn’t last. Even with daily waterings, I periodically see heat stress. Any tips for getting a great lawn on straight sand? Any advice I see online are generally geared toward more conventional soil types.

  1. I was in a hurry last year and had to put zoysia down on in sand. It required watering almost every day in the Florida summer in some spots. I put a bit of compost down on top and worked it down below the blades. Made a huge difference in how long those spots can go with out water.

I again needed a quick fix this spring so I put one of those mushroom compost bags from HD/Lowes about every 100 sqft. For your lawn, you could find it cheaper and better quality if you buy it by the cubic yard.

You’ll be surprised at how much a little top dressing of compost will help and pretty quickly too. Should notice results within a week.

Also, can’t overstate how much a leveling rake helped work it down to the soil better than a broom or regular rake.
