I’ve direct sowed as well as planted plugs of cardinal flower several times in many parts of my yard. It’s always pretty frustrating, but then I’ll see a hummingbird on one or something and it makes me want to plant more the next year.
It might be browse pressure that’s the problem, rather than some soil/moisture/sunlight aspect of my yard. A lot of my yard is moist and shady, so it seemed like cardinal flower would be a good fit. But it has rarely worked out.
