Thanks! I have a new apple tree that is a little too tall in the trunk and I really didn't want to top it completely. I can notch and prune instead. This is great for height control without having to cut the main trunk too low and spend a season on entirely new growth
I bought a fig tree and it has some figs and leaves which are only at the very top of the tree.It just won't make any branches. So I wonder if I should try to do some notching above each bud down to the bottom of the trunk. And some of the figs just fall off without ripining.
I'm so very happy to have learned how to notch my new potted fig tree.So everywhere I cut the notch now has a new branch and little fig buds are showing eveywhere.I want to thank this channel so much.
This is awesome! I tried notching a few weeks ago and now have several branches coming out 🙂 one question for you – why do we avoid branches lower down on a tree (I’ve heard <18-24”)? I have some potted trees and am trying to figure out if that rule holds for them, too, before I prune any new buds. Thank you!
Watched this video & notched 6 places on a pair tree that was lacking some limbs – Results 6 new limbs that grew about 25 days later – it works great !!

How long does it take to see some growth?
How early can I notch it? If I do it straight after planting, will it affect root growth while the tree is establishing?
Great help thank you and presented in an easy to understand way.

Love placing branches where I want them with notching. Such a great technique 🌱
Had no idea, just went out and notched my pair a few times to try and encourage some branches and improve its shape. Thanks!
