Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. "You don't even wanna know what he gets up to" I nearly fell out! I say this all the time but I will NOT eat after my kids or my husband. That's my reason why though!

  2. "I'm not bossy, just aggressively helpfully!" You need that on a magnet, sticker or a shirt. That is gold right there!

  3. Those magazines are part of the Edible Communities family. Multiple communities across the country have these magazines tailored to specific regions and cities. I’ve met the founders a few times, they are amazing women. I’m so happy you e come across one. They always have great recipes for local seasonal foods. Your recipe looked amazing!

  4. You’ll have to try the recipe again using fresh lemons. Concentrate in my opinion has such a completely different (and not good) flavor compared to fresh. I bet the recipe would be even more yummy!

  5. Jess… this looks amazing. I have all the ingredients in my garden. Lucky me!! Thanks for sharing. 😊

  6. When I grow cow peas when I see a nice harvest I pick them all green and all and when they’re still tender green pods I pick those too throw them all in a ziplock bag in the freezer and I have my field peas and snaps

  7. I have a collection of the Edible Ohio magazines. I really like them. There is a lot of local information.

  8. Gumbo and chard okra is my family's favorite way to eat okra! I really need more space to grow more okra for a years supply we NEVER have enough 💚💚💚

  9. I am really enjoying these kitchen adventures you've been including lately. Just another facet of homesteading examples for all of us to get a peek into the heart of R&R.Thank you for sharing with us! May you continue to be blessed. 💚🌻

  10. I grew up eating purple hill peas and just realized that is what cow peas were. Nobody told me the actual name hah!!

  11. My wife is from Arkansas so we have ate out share of black eye peas/ purple hull. We do love okra but I prefer it fried with a little flour or corn meal. It is good with tomatoes, the acid takes care of the slime from the okra. We lived in SC yrs ago and found okra and tomatoes in a can at Ingles where I worked.

  12. Lol. I gave birth to 5 of them and the lolololo. When Mr Jeremiah hears about that one????? Blessings everyone

  13. The way I make pasta sauce is to char tomatoes and garlic. Don’t burn them, just give them a good char sear. High heat for a short amount of time. Plenty of olive oil. They should still be juicy.😋 Then I throw them in the blender, seeds and all with fresh basil, extra virgin olive oil, dried oregano + salt and pepper. It comes out so zesty! Add some pasta (I’m on keto, so I use zucchini noodles) and fresh parmesean and you’re in heaven!

  14. Love You’re Apron! 🦘Would love to purchase one for myself as I’m an Aussie living amongst the Kangaroos.Would you please share the company you purchased? 😍

  15. I LOVE IT!!! A family bowl and fork! No pretense here!!! God bless y’all! Thanks it looks delish!
