Here’s a lovely Platycerium superbum we met at the @thehuntingtonlibrary – 2️⃣ I measured the light in the morning at the point where my hand was: 560 foot-candles.

3️⃣ The more important thing is to get a sense of what the physical surroundings are that produce 560 foot-candles at that moment – essentially asking yourself #WhatMyPlantSees – sun filtered through trees *AND* evenly distributed patches of sky giving indirect light from all around. The inside of your house is more like a cave: opaque ceiling and walls with openings called windows. Measure it when the sun is not shining directly through the window and you’ll see.

The most recent posts on houseplantjournal.com discuss measuring light but this only gives you the intensity at that moment and at that spot. In the next article, I’ll discuss duration and the Daily Light Integral.
