I have never seen anything like this before, possibly some sort of disease? Found on bicolor corn that is dying.

The plant disease in your picture is known as Ustilago maydis, commonly referred to as corn smut. This fungal disease infects maize and can lead to a significant reduction in crop yield.

Though it is a disease it’s at least edible so not a total loss

It’s probably most widely consumed in Mexico where it’s called huitlacoche

That is sought after in the right circles

  4. Does sharing photos of corn smut make OP a cornographer?

SCORE! You may lose some ears of corn, but it’s very much worth it.
While not a true mushroom, it is a highly desirable edible fungus.
It has been a delicacy in southern North America and Mesoamerica for at least centuries.

Don’t know the name of it, but in Michigan we call it smut. I’ve heard that some people eat it, but i wouldn’t

I DESPERATELY need to try corn smut because I’ve just heard too many good things about it and I just want to experience it for myself with how it’s traditionally made
