I did some major planting and landscaping a few years back. This area faces south (we are in Alberta, Canada) and as you can see has the garage wall right behind it.

It gets HOT, as expected being south facing with a wall. As such, it gets extra water during the spring and summer.

However, this year coming from winter to spring I lost a few ground plants where the red arrow is and the Star Juniper had a bunch of die off while the evergreen experienced slightly less (all on their south facing sides). I figure this is due to how warm it is there, either they are late preparing for our cold winters, or they come out of their slowed stasis too early in the spring when it warms up.

Thoughts? Do I have this right? And, are there simple methods to prevent this (I thought about covering them)?
