Its a bad time for me to be having a dilemma in my garden. The summer garden season is coming to a close and the fall garden is getting ready to pick up.
Sandy Bottom Homestead was started to supplement our food supply. By Gardening and raising chickens we have been able to meet that goal and start to surpass it. Follow us as we continue to build out our homestead and become better gardeners.

  1. With it being so hot, I think I’d pull them. I’ve seen a few people pull them at 90 days and they’ve been fine. Pretty sure that was a tiger swallowtail. My struggle is keeping vs letting go of summer plants that will produce through frost, whether or not to put down two more beds in the next two months instead of one so I have room for my fall plants and whether to keep my grow bags around through fall despite wanting to minimize them so I can have more room to grow, especially since I started more tomatoes and peppers already. Im thinking the new peppers will be good for overwintering. I’m trying to clean up my garden and patio and it’s proving quite difficult.

  2. I wear light colored long sleeve UV shirts pretty much everyday. They are a game changer in this heat. Looks like we're going to get a slight break after today..

  3. this year has been awful of a growing season for me always rainy on top of that one of my watermelon plants looks sickly

  4. Ive been having this struggle with my tomatillos. Do i rip them up for more collards, rip them up and start from seed, clone em, or try and nurse them through this heat.

  5. Pulled up and entire bed of tomatoes and sweet potatoes so I could plant rutabagas, turnips & carrots. Feels good once you commit to it lol!

  6. I wish my sweet potatoes were at 90 days…I'd dig those suckers up! I'm guessing mine are at 70…can't find anywhere in my garden notes telling me when I planted them! Ugh. I really enjoy watching you garden and listening to your thought process. Keep up the good work! and Thank you!

  7. My summer garden is definitely showing the effects of 100+ temps.
I am now preparing areas for cool season crops and am pleased that my shaded garden of snap peas is germinating well.
If I planted in my sunny beds right now, I think the plants would die of the heat.

  8. Started indoor seeds for the first time, brassicas mostly. They're overdue to be in the ground based on my schedule but I just don't think its a good idea to when there's a heat index of 105 outside
