Thanks for watching!
Love and God Bless, Mary
I have a greenstalk and I LOVE IT! We live in Georgia and are full sun. Get a spinner so you can turn the planter if you have in partial sun. We ended up putting it on our patio where we have a deck above us to protect from the full sun. There's a channel called Growing in the Garden and she has sail's for shade. Thinking shade cloth or sail's for protection from full sun.
Just ordered your book and can't wait. So excited!
I have a great resource that has helped me a lot when planning my garden. It's called Clyde's garden planner.
I am in zone 6b and already have planted peas, lettuce, carrots and cabbage. A nice thing about fall gardening is less pests. This is my first fall garden and I’m really excited to harvest into October.
Thank you for all your wonderful videos, Mary…I always learn so much from you! I’ve been gardening vertically since 2012 and I have lots of tips to share. However, I use a soil-less system and it’s worked out really well. Also, will be ordering your book ….I’m so excited to have all your wisdom and knowledge available in old-fashioned form. God Bless you and your family.
Very useful video. We got one of the GreenStalk vertical gardens this spring and it has worked quite well. For me, the trick was lots of water. No light sprinkle. I usually spend between 5-10 minutes filling up the reservoir and letting it run down through. But that’s during the heat of our spring and early summer. This will be my first fall. Also when the seeds first began sprouting, in addition to watering down through the middle, I watered each pocket. To give a little extra help. We have lots of bugs here and so I used some bug netting in the bottom of that top reservoir, weighted down with 5 rocks, and tied bug netting around the drain pipe opening at bottom. Just to prevent bugs and dirt from getting in there and blocking it. Might be overkill but I felt much better doing that. I grew cucumbers this spring and quickly discovered I needed the supports they sell separately. We have the 5 stack original planter and I find three sets of supports are sufficient—top, middle, bottom. Plan to do lettuce and, after watching this video, zucchini this fall. According to the A&M Agrilife Vegetable Planting Guide (free printout) here in Central Texas we can also have a second crop of potatoes. Between my yard and my daughter’s yard we have 15 raise beds so lots of room for experimenting. Thanks so much for your encouraging and so helpful video!
Zone 10a here. Still hotter than Satan's feet here. Our fall crops generally do better starting mid September
The best vertical garden I've found is called the Greenstalk. Its a smallish, family owned and operated business. They're wonderful!
Hi Mary Australia here waiting for your book to arrive hope it’s soon so excited 😆
hey Mary my husband and I just planted beets and more Swiss chard. We planted the golden beets and they are doing very well. We have a small garden, and our beets went into raised beds. Thanks for this info Mary.
I have a 30m² plot in a community garden. From early summer I have butternut squash, Japanese pumpkin (kabocha), baby marrow (zucchini), carrots, beet, potatoes, strawberries, and a whole bunch of herbs and flowers.
For my autumn section, I'm planting more beetroot, more butternut, more baby marrow, pattypan, sweet potatoes, more potatoes, corn, greenbeans, and cucumber, and chillies.
I just got your book yesterday, and it is so fun and informative.
In England (UK), I plant zucchini (courgettes here lol) over an arch, that way they don't take up precious space in my garden x
Mary let me know when you try the vertical garden series. I have a greenstalk planter. Going to try this fall
Yvonne
Thanks for sharing. Still waiting for job. I really want the library one but it looks like I' m not going to get it.
Dear Mary, thank you for the invaluable information you've shared in this video. I also live in Central Texas, and I couldn't help but notice that you use hay in your raised beds. I was wondering if you would share where you can find hay or straw to use as mulch? I usually use bark mulch, but the idea of layering hay or straw beneath bark mulch intrigues me. Thank you for sharing so much information with your followers.
I GOT MY BOOK!!! So lovely and love the way it is organized. Wonderful job Mary, congrats! ❤
You have the prettiest, soothing .& professional speech & voice. You would make big bucks doing voiceovers!
Eat 6oz of fish chicken , or steak and a vegetable, or salad for lunch & dinner
Eat 2 or 3 eggs only with Italian made only olive oil 1 tea spoon all other oils are poison
I regrow celery in water and I use the leaves for everything, salad, soup, stew, the leaves have great celery flavor! I even put them in sandwiches. It never gets to be stalk-like really, it usually rots by then. But the leaves put a fresh celery flavor in so many things!
Green stalks. They are made here in USA. I have 2 and I love them. If you watch, they do go on sale.
Your book is beautiful!! I have flipped through it and know it will be a resource I come back to again and again. Looking forward to trying some of the recipes! THANK YOU for all the time and effort you put into making this resource. I know it was a labor of love. 🥰
👍
I have your new book and I love it.
Just got your book. It is the best reference for traditional skills that I own. I know this book took a lot of work. Thanks so much for caring about us.
I enjoyed this video. I have a couple of those Greenstalks (vertical towers) that I really like. One stays in my office under lights and grows mostly dwarf tomatoes and lettuce, all year round. If you're going to put yours outside, I would recommend also getting the automatic watering system, especially if summers are going to stay this miserable going forward.
This is my second year with a Greenstalk garden on my deck. This year I got the irrigation add on. It only runs for 2 minutes per day and everything is so very happy. I was disappointed when I planted seeds, but did much better with starts this year.
Don’t care for turnips, but LOVE those turnip greens!! Haven’t tried pickled or fermented turnips yet so that is something I may have to try.
You’re getting on the Greenstalk train. Yay!
Great information!
Love, love, love your new book! Thank you for all you do!
Hey Mary- Thanks for your info. Always helpful. I love my Greenstalk planters. I live in Central Texas as well. I helped set my sister, my grown children and grandchildren up with Greenstalks. We all grow different plants. Mine are filled with strawberry plants. When it's 103 day after day, I have to water about every 3 days. Mine are set up with the spinner base. I turn the planters 1/4 turn every time I water. They are great for growing greens, flowers and herbs. I wouldn't grow larger plants in them. Micro tomatoes and eight ball zucchini plants work well. Good luck with yours.
Hi Mary. Those vertical planters are called Greenstalks they are made in the USA
You would love a GreenStalk tower! I have 3 now. Cassandra at Becoming a Farm girl channel has several and she uses those things to the max potential. She is a fabulous resource and a very sweet girl. If you two haven't hooked up yes, you should.
I live on the Gulf coast and am learning the truth of "full sun" does not mean the sun we get.
Cooked radishes? Never heard of that.
Thank you for your inspirational videos! I have ordered your book – looking forward to it arriving in September🙂
Oh my, I'm so excited… I received my book this morning, and it is the prettiest book I've seen. Love it. It will be a joy to read while staying in from the heat here in Louisiana . Thank you so much
My book came last week and I love it!
Thank you for putting wind in my sails to go ahead and start some more seeds 🙂 I'm exhausted fighting off the insects organically by this time every year, and it's hard to want to start seeds while still fighting the bugs…lol The squash bugs have been terrible this year and have even gone after my okra, bell peppers, etc. They definitely aren't sticking to just my squash…ugh I'm grateful I had a few months of ample harvest, but man I'm frustrated right now watching those things take out a huge plant overnight…lol
Beet greens and turnip greens can also be included in the greens category. From each plant you get 2 kinds of veggies: greens and roots. My family likes these greens even better than spinach.
I received your cookbook today, I love, love, love it! It's a really nice book Mary! Thank you sweet friend 💖
I got my book!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hi Mary, I received your book today….. I'm so happy for you – and me!
I have a green stalk vertical planter (5 tier). The secret to having a successful vertical planter is your soil. It needs to be a light soil that can wick the water through your planter once you have an established root system. That's how it even disperses from to feeding the water. I also reuse the water daily by using the overflow pipe into a water collection system.
I appreciate lots of the information you provide. However, USDA growing zone has nothing to do with first or last frost date. Growing zone is only about average cold temps and best relates to perennials and not annual vegetables. First frost date is relative for fall planting.
Your book came yesterday! I can't wait to get into it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
I just ordered my copy from Amazon today can’t wait to get it
