This spekboom is due for a repot. It’s been growing slowly in its current pot since 2020. Next season, I’d like to speed up its growth by putting it in a bigger pot.
I’ve got a cylindrical pot that’s about the same diameter as the current pot, but taller.
And I’ve got a rectangular pot that’s about the same height as the current pot, but longer and wider.
The cylindrical and rectangular pots contain a nearly identical volume of soil.
In which pot I would get the faster growth?
I’m thinking the deeper one, but I really don’t know. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I don’t know the answer, but it’s an interesting thought experiment. My guess would be the flat one because it has more inviting space for roots (warmth and light away from underneath the trunk). However, if you want to thicken without planting in the ground, the best bet is to use a mesh pot or colander.

I would go with the rectangular pot. With soil volume being roughly the same, I think that pot would get you the growth you’re looking for but in a way that would be more conducive to shallow bonsai pots.

I would put it in a much bigger pot if you want the trunk to grow fast.

just any big plastic pot and leave it outside. I’d repot in the early spring, because a spring+summer’s worth of growth will more than double the current trunk width.
