Not sure how to approach this lawn. Advice Please!
Moved into my home in May (Southwestern Ontario) and my yard is full of different weeds and growths. I’m happy the yard is full of growth but wanting to replace the weeds with grass. Any help is appreciated, thank you!
TZone and a pump sprayer… Two applications about 10 days apart..

I used weed b gone from Ortho and atrazine, worked pretty well, the only thing I have left are sedge and kyllinga, I’m using sedgehammer+ for those, just make sure that you read the labels of whatever you are using since you can damage the good grass

Easy – with a ball in one hand and a couple treats for that goodest pup! 🥰 Go play!!! 😃🙌

That’s a good looking backyard and a happy dog. I’m not anti lawn by any stretch, but I’m not sure I’d introduce a lot of chemicals that could give my dog (or me) cancer just to get rid of the weeds. Mostly in your photos I’m seeing white clover, which used to be included in lawn seed mixes because it is so good at fixing nitrogen for the grasses and stays green in a drought. There’s plantain and violet too. I’d keep it low intervention. Aerate and dethatch, overseed in the fall. Hand spray with weed killer or even just dig the plantain and larger weeds. Milorganite or something similar to boost the nitrogen. As the grass gets healthier it will crown at the clover.

Speedzone has worked wonders on my yard this year. Mixed it with tenacity with great results.

A mix of 2,4 d (name doesn’t really matter, we use threesome) triclopyr, and some form of sticker(we use chem-stik, but a little bit of dawn soap will work. Helps it to bind to the weed. Broadcast spray it and hit it again in a month. Fertilize it while your at it and repeat every 5 weeks or so. You can spray the weeds sooner if it bothers you, I’d still wait a couple weeks to hit it again

I think it looks great honestly – I am happy if it’s green not too concerned with what species it is
Edit: I love your fence as well

Approach carefully- there is a yellow Doggo- we don’t know his intentions yet.

Likely you will need to burn the lawn down and start over. And you will want to get on this like ASAP because your window to do a lawn renovation is closing or may already be closed depending on your zone.

I think this lawn looks great! It looks natural with lots of interesting texture and variation. I much prefer it to the featureless or plaid look.

Mechanically you can aerate and remove weed/moss and just overseed. The problem is the full grass which is kinda golf course is quite vulnerable. Dog pee is a problem. Your lawn seems healthy just aerate and sow grass seeds keep fresh

Also from Ontario. Your only legal option for weed killer in Ontario is Weed b Gone ( also known as Fiesta) It uses highly concentrated iron to kill weeds so it’s much safer and better for the environment then other herbicides.
Buy the concentrate, mix it yourself in a pump sprayer and add a few drops of Dawn dish soap to help it stick to the plants. No walk the yard and spot spray the weeds. You may have to hit them again after a few days to ensure they are gone. It also helps to break up the lawn into sections and work one section at a time.
Right now is the best time for overseeing your lawn in Ontario so even if you don’t spray the weeds make sure to get grass seed down to help build your lawn for next year
The beautiful pup seems to like the lawn as is. ☺️

It looks like someone introduced clover. Probably on purpose because grass was dying on them. I’d start over seeding. But I’m in Ontario also, and would recommend just waiting for spring at this point.
Edit: I have dogs so don’t want to use chemicals, over seeding has been effective for me.

What is this weed in the third picture? My lawn is full of those and I hate it. How do I get rid of them?

Cut it weekly. The clover is beautiful

So I wouldn’t be to concerned about chemicals and the dog, I apply herbicides almost in a daily basis and everything legal for use for cosmetic purposes on lawns in ontario (fiesta) is so diluted it hardly works anyways and is only .01% iron, just make sure your grass is dry before letting dog run on it. Is more the dye in the product people whos lawns i apply to get concerned with as it can stick to their fur making them pinkish red and track through the house, only time your allowed to use the heavy chemicals here is on golf courses and poisonous plants, anything else is so restricted that wouldn’t worry much bout it. With the broadleaf plantain you got there can kill it by drenching the leaves if dont soak it enough wont kill root and will regrow, clover and creeping charlie/violet (hard to tell in pic which one it is but looks more like creeping charlie) are more resistant but if you wanted to kill them to just make sure get a good soak on creeping Charlie leaves and clover need to mix a higher concentration (it also has an oil like layer that repels water) so hard to get it without killing surrounding grass even with a surfactant. But if your planning to overseed the area anyways and you want it gone just hit it heavy and rake up/overseed after it dies out. Will requires multiple applications regardless, another thing if you dont already bag your grass clippings (everytime you drive over a weed with seed pods, or for examples crab grass can germinate from the leaf blades) your spreading it further across your lawn 🙂

That’s a great lawn, green and lush. Just keep it mowed and have fun with the pup.
I’ve stopped worrying about every little imperfection years ago. The pups and kids enjoy it. That’s all that matters.

I’d just walk right up to it.
Probably forward left right left right
