Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. G'day Everyone, preserving any excess harvest of homegrown chemical-free fruit and veg is important and smart. If you are interested, the link to the Harvest Right freeze dryer mentioned in the video is https://affiliates.harvestright.com/1099.html they are a very good made-in-the-USA machine! Anyway, thanks again for all your support and make sure you "get into it…" Cheers, :)๐Ÿ‘

  2. aaww she have the same name as my girl! mine is old to we are expecting her to live us any day, we will get new puppy right away to but we will wait for her to pass away we know it is hard to have an older dog with a puppy becos it will keep trying to play with her and well she is old she is like a cat sleeps and rarely plays.

  3. how do you cook and eat nausturgeons and amaranth? How to harvest sweet potatoes and use them in food? Thank you

  4. As a newbie I struggle with how to use and eat these vegies I grew. Potatoes for instance .. I don't see em as food I grew em but never harvested them. It's the dirt. Has to be washed and thrown into a whole foods plastic bag and when I see em in the fridge or table then it is food. Could you show us how to prep store and eat them in dishes?

  5. I have to agree about the freeze dryer. We got ours from Harvest Right and it absolutely changed how I felt about harvesting. So much less stress for me now and much easier to store our garden goodies now. <3 Thanks for the tour!

  6. Ginger..good idea
Have you watched The Dimming he dimming? Awh Bella. I put down 2 cats and 3 were buds…so the one is LOST
    ๐Ÿ™ I don't want any more animals.

  7. Hey Mark,

  8. I could give you my walk about in my Garden .. and all you will see is destroyed crops full of bugs .. it would make Santa Klauss Swab so happy .. Hes even encouraging me to start a Bug farm.. which i probably will do .. eat bugs be broke and be happy ๐Ÿค—.. whats not to like ๐Ÿ˜‹

  9. It's never too soon to get another dog, or cat, and nothing will heal your heart and soul faster.

So happy that she came into your lives when she did. You need her – she needed you all – and all is as it is meant to be.

Writing this with my lovely Truffle kitty girl in my lap. She gave me a scare, by not coming home last night or this morning, after which we had a big thunderstorm move through – but, shortly after the storm, I walked onto the back porch, and she was there, more than ready to come inside.

Animals are the best. Lovely friends and companions.

  10. Beautiful way to start my morning watching this video. Itโ€™s a beautiful garden! And what a happy ending to it with the story about Bella. So happy for you and Nina.

  11. Love your garden and absolutely adore Bella. We got another dog I thought to soon too but we adore her a couple of years on and she is a part of our fam. Love your videos and information, you inspired me and I now have 15 raised garden beds and learning lots. Thankyou

  12. Welcome, Bella!!! It's amazing how quickly your heart can open up to another animal. We went through this 11 years ago, when my mother died in January 2012 and then in March we had to put down our last dog. We "thought" we'd wait a year for our next Akita…. Ha Ha said the Dog Gods. By April we had Risky, who was no risk at all! Suddenly, our home was filled with Light, Love and Laughter again ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•
How wonderful that your in-laws will still have Bella in their lives!

  13. I'm 44 yr old with Fibromyalgia and other health issues now raising an italian greyhound puppy. We also have a 5 yr old mini schnauzer and my husband is now retired so raising a pup is a little easier on me now. As much as I love animals, I think these will be the last dogs I own because I can't see myself doing this again when they pass away. Raising a puppy properly is hard and stressful.

You will always grieve Scooter. I still grieve over all the animals that I have lost since I was a child. They all hold a special place in your heart and it always hurts. I'm glad you guys are sharing that love with Bella now. She's a beauty and she's going to be your gardening partner from here on. Enjoy her. God bless.

  14. Not to soon. Sometimes a new love helps heal the void left. When one door closes another is open. Garden looks wonderful!

  15. Greetings from Corvallis Oregon US! We greatly enjoyed your garden tour. So much gardening success! We are impressed. And curious: what do you do with so much abundance? Do you share with a local food bank or such? Thanks for a great video.

  16. I have my large veggie garden in low raised beds and containers. Then I also have about 50+ flower beds around my place. I lose count and never come up with the same number twice. I am still playing catch up on the weeding after losing a lot of trees the last few years. But it is coming along and looking much better.

I am glad you have Bella. She is such a sweet puppy.
