Did you direct seed or transplant? Carrots get their ~~knickers~~ roots in a twist if they are disturbed by transplanting.

  2. Carrots always seem to be a pain in butt to grow. I swear unless it’s half sand and half dirt it doesn’t do well for me. Props to getting some this year.

You are now, unless you stole those carrots.

Sure looks like you’re one now! I finally had some grow this year and they were pretty similar in size.

carrots are finicky. they do well in loose soil with no rocks

I just sprinkle seeds across the bed and water them in. They do well that way. The more I care for carrots, the more trouble I get into. Also, it’s taken me three years to get soil to a place they like- loose, zero rocks/sticks, freely draining.

Carrots are harder to grow than you might expect, and you are **so close.** You are really almost there for perfect carrots. You had good germination, which is the hardest part, as carrot seeds take 30 days to germinate. You have to keep them evenly moist throughout this entire time. You’ll feel like a crazy person watering this patch of soil for a month. You had just the right amount of nitrogen in your soil, those tops are bushy (πŸ‘πŸ»), but not crazy huge (excess N in the soil). The twisted short roots means your soil is too compact, *that’s what you need to fix.* Aerate it as deep as you can (like with a broad fork) and mix in some compost. Or sand, if you want to make that a dedicated carrot growing area with sand. Once you have the soil very loose and friable, you will get longer roots. You’ve almost got it, next year is YOUR CARROT YEAR.

No. You are a mini fantasy carrot artist!

Just make sure you direct sow and your soil is loose and fluffy. I don’t use any sand but do mix a little potting soil or coco coir in.

Haha mine always turn out that way too! But they’re still delicious, good for using in soups

One of the most difficult things we’ve tried to grow.

You can use the greens of the carrots to make pesto. Make it the same as if you had basil and it tastes really good.
