Big maple near my house. Kids love the tree, it provides great shade, and plenty of cicada shells. Anything I can do, or will this heal naturally? I would hate to lose it.
Trees don’t heal wounds the same as humans; that wound will always be there, whether the tree seals around it or not (probably not, anyway)
But you can: have an arborist out in person to assess it better than we can with a couple pictures over the internet. The arborist may recommend removal, or they may recommend cabling + weight reduction pruning. If you’re unsure what to do, get several assessments from different people and compare (or come back here with better/more pics and their assessments and we can help you from there)

I’ve seen old trees that survived a split like this with two 1” stainless steel threaded rods through bolted at the 1/3’s of the split. It’ll take one big drill bit. Back up with 4 x 4 plates and nuts and hope for the best
