Kaye if you’re getting a C-, I’m getting an F lol. I think what you’re doing without much help is amazing. I’m disabled and I’ve downsized and now living in a subdivision and still can’t keep up with my garden. I love the stories about Grandparents and what they did to survive. I only saw my grandparents for two weeks in the summer when I was little, so I didn’t learn much except how fast she could shell peas, and cut corn off a cob, and roll out biscuits just with her hands. She was the best cook and no one ever heard her complain.
There's no way you are a C-. YOU ARE AN A+ if anything. I am constantly amazed at what you can get done.
You're doing so much, don't be too hard on yourself. You are single, older, and newish at homesteading. Do what you can, because it's so much more than most people are doing. You're such an inspiration to me. ❤
I had tons of snakes, lizards and other desert creepy crawlies, on my 1 acre in Riverside County, California. Haven't seen a single snake on my large, rural property in the Missouri Ozarks. Hopefully scarcity won't cause me to stop watching where I step, because I know they're around.
I really enjoyed this and was giggling along with you about all of it, this life, when you were a city girl and now trying to farm on your own. It reminds me of the old film clip of a man spinning one, then two, then seven or so plates in the air and he can't let any fall. It also reminds me of the Whack A Mole game. I'm dreaming of it cooling down to the 80s and 90s midday and I won't have such a TINY window of opportunity to get things done out there!
I love listening to you talk about your grandparents. I am freezing and canning at the moment (all day). Last year I learned how the corn was pollinated. Very interesting!
Can you freeze grapes and juice later
Hi Kaye, I know how you feel girl. I am 65 years old now. I retired 3 years ago and let me tell you I was ready! After working about 40 years or more I can finally slow down a little. I said a little! Lol! Always something to do or take care of. Especially when we are gardeners! I wish I had your energy! I use too! ❤😊
Kaye, I got bit by a copperhead on a Sunday night in August 2018. I drove myself to the local hospital. They airlifted me to Shawnee ICU to be treated with antivenom. I received 21 vials and spent 3 days in ICU. Thank the Lord I was working at that time with great health insurance. Out of $300K medical bills, I was out of pocket only $250. August is overwhelming and remember you can only do what you can safely do. Be blessed.
I LOVE This one
I didn't know the reason kernels are missing! Eating you biggest meal at noon(dinner)….that's what I remember growing up, then left overs for supper. Last corn I picked was to mature so what's left will feed the worms. My Mama was a hard worker that sounds much like you describe your grandmother. Hang in there.
you talk of snake problems,,,,,,
i don't have copperheads here in Southern Arizona
but we have Western Diamondback Rattlers
as far as anti venom vaccine goes , we have a collection of shots here at the ranch ,,, if bitten would take precious time to get medics out here so we keep anti vaccine on hand
pretty Kaye you look every bit a movie star your charisma
is the golden age of gorgeous beautiful movie stars grrrrr
seeya Kaye,,,,,,,,,,,,,,xxxxEd
I would definitively give you at least an A😊 ❤. You deserve it.
You can only do so much in a da. Take it easy on yourself. I would make the jelly or freeze the grapes.
I give you an A+. You work so hard. Speed up as much as you can but remember doing what we can counts for a WHOLE lot. You are a huge example to me and many others. None of us are perfect and we always judge ourselves too harshly. God bless you for all you are doing. You’re doing a lot more than you realize, a lot more. Late bloomer Kay in MT. 😊
We’ve had a low crop this year. But it’s been just enough to eat without getting tired of it. I wish I had enough to give our kids but they need to learn to grow their own anyway 😂
Super Hot in CA. Weeds keep growing. I feel what you are up against. If it would just cool off I could be more productive. Hang in there. No such thing of perfect gardens. Get up each day and be grateful and do your best.
Oh Kaye! Your stories are so similar to mine as far as our families in the south! I have been amazed by what I learned about my grandparents and great grandparents from my mom and dad and aunts and uncles. I really enjoyed this video! Take care and I look forward to your next video!
I can so relate to you in trying to do it all myself. You have a beautiful day!
It's been in the 100+ temps for most of July and all of August so far. The 10 day forecast says more of the same. Today, tomorrow, the next day, and the one after that are expected to be 108 degrees real temp here in Fort Worth, TX. My garden was finished in early July. Most of it fried to a crisp. I still have my peppers under shade cloth and I water every morning, along with my blackberry bushes and my asparagus. I don't want to lose either one of those to the heat. I planted a little elderberry bush early this past spring and I water it every day but it looks very sad and I don't know if it will survive the Texas heat. As you know, I am single, 66, and still work full time. I don't have a lot of land, not nearly as much as you, just 1/3 acre lot in a little old neighborhood that allows chickens. I have 7 8 x 4 raised beds and plant to build a few more this fall, and I have one chicken…the rest of my flock is gone now. I'm not sure my chicken is going to make it in this heat, although I do the best I can to help her out. I give her frozen watermelon each afternoon, plenty of shade and fresh cool water. I even stick a frozen jug of water in her coop at night to cozy up to. I am an Ohio girl, born and raised and moved here in 2019 to be closer to my daughter, who has lived here for more than 25 years, but I don't know if I am cut out for the extremes of Texas living. It's a very hard existence and gardening here is extremely difficult. Don't mind me. I'm having one of those days where the heat has just done me in and I am about to wave the white flag. Tomorrow will be a better day….at least I hope so. Somebody tell whoever shut the water off in Texas to turn it back on please? We need rain desparately.
Forever smart and beautiful and cute as a button, GOD BLESS 😇🌹
I'm just eating everything right there in my survival garden.
❤❤❤❤ You are doing the best you can and that's all you can ask for ❤❤❤❤
Creation is evidence of the incredible intelligence of God/Yahweh!
Oh Kaye, I FEEL you, and share every thought you’re having. This is the time of year where everything is so overwhelming … it’s INSANE. BUT – it does occupy the mind. There’s little time to fret over ‘stuff’ going on in this crazy, upside down world we’re living in. My postage stamp sized kitchen is a mess with the harvest, and all the pots/pans/jars/devices necessary to preserve it!! And every time I try a new recipe or method, I’m often disappointed in the result, which makes me feel like I’ve wasted time and resources 🫤. Yet, we press on, hoping ‘next time’ will be better. But at 67, I don’t have much of anything better to occupy my time (except for grandchildren, of course). I swear, tho, the older I get, the faster time seems to pass. Such is the business of LIFE, right?
You’re so right about the appearance of food. No one wants the ugly, mis-shapen stuff that comes from an organic garden. They want the pretty, unblemished fruits of industrial farming. When I share with my children, and the neighbors, I give them the prettiest stuff, lest it be left on their counters to rot. And at this point, I only share if/when asked, which I encourage them to do. I hate my efforts going to waste!!
Hang in there, sweet friend. Things could be so much worse, I think. We must practice gratitude in all things … being thankful everyday for the burden of abundance!!
Yes k I am with you on that one I have four teenagers living at home and my husband with brain issues; and his one me. If I had five more me's I could get it all done. But I don't so it is what it is. Love your all honesty and your; channel thanks for what you do
First of all, you boggle my mind with the scope of your vision and how much you have been able to accomplish❣️Especially in the short time you have lived in your new home ❤ Secondly, the first years have the most trials and errors as we learn what works and what doesn’t in the our space (and then we have to add on what nature will throw at us 🤪). I have been working on my particular garden for 7 years now and this is the first year I’ve gotten more than just snacks 😅❣️ Keep up the good work, Kaye❣️ I’ve learned so much from you over the years 😊❤️ I know you’ll figure out your best pace 🙏🏻❤️
I did know that but just recently heard that from someone else. My first crop was good but had 2 storms a week apart that was last year. I didn't plant corn this year. I have a small garden and corn takes up a lot of space. Have you ever made creamed corn, to die for yummy! Nancy from Nebraska
I just picked my garden, in NJ. 50+ lbs of tomatoes, 6 heads of cabbage, and 6 24in cucumbers. My pathetic harvest of 60 corn plants was about 12 ear. today i found one with only 3 kernels. I am no corn grower
Harvested tomatoes and cukes last couple of days. Still have little watermelons (personal sized ones about the size of a big softball and that is the variety type). Still also have a couple of carrots celery, onion, and honeydew and zucchini and peppers. Grapes still around but I am sharing with the birds it seems. So many it is fine as I have been eating them and may make juice. I have to water each and every day as temps still are 100+.
