Read carefully: I’m NOT posting this to say “despite my best efforts, leaves will yellow”
–
Thinking this way (blame yourself vs. don’t blame yourself) doesn’t leave room for Nature. You’ll continue to think that plants grow and thrive solely because of your skill and effort.
–
While your skill and effort certainly do play a part, that shouldn’t lead you to believe that you have control over every biological process of a plant.
–
Here’s what I see: when the oldest (lowest on a vine) leaf turns yellow, it’s because the plant has programmed the cells in that leaf to break down their cholorphyll to salvage the nitrogen and other mobile nutrients for newer growth (look closely at the growing tip of this vine).
–
Am I worried? – No, this is exactly how the plant should behave *BUT* since my original Monstera maintained 8-9 leaves per vine, and here I’m observing older leaf death on the 6th leaf, I’m inclined to say that a larger pot and a repotting would allow for 8-9 leaves per vine like my original. Regarding light: both locations have excellent views of the sky so I know photosynthesis is adequate.
–
Am I sad? – of course. That leaf was one of the originals that came with me to my new church – I’m sad to see it go but I know that a plant must grow into its space – or in this case, within its available nutrients.
–
Do you think your effort is 100% responsible for how your plant grows? How much contribution would you give to biological/environmental processes? 50/50? 80/20?
