Can someone explain what happened to this small tree? It appears that a different bread of tree grew out of the other.

This is called “[reversion](https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/understanding_tree_reversions)”. The plant is a cultivar of a wild plant that was selected because of its unusual growth, in this case compact leaves. The larger branches growing out have reverted back to the original growth pattern of the wild variant. So more of a de-mutation in a way. The reverted branch will grow much faster than the cultivar branches but you can just can just cut away the reverted branch and it should be fine.
