#sansevieriasunday here’s a January 2018 ‘House of Slytherin’ family photo
.
📷 2) a super wide angle lens allows me to show you the light source for all my upstairs hallway plants: the skylight. The basic thing to say is “it lets in the sun”, but a photographer understands the difference between lighting from direct sun vs. lighting from the open sky. My skylight allows me to photograph my space as though it were lit by a ceiling mounted softbox.
.
For most of the day, the light that comes through the skylight is what’s called “bright indirect light”, which is possible because of the VIEW OF THE SKY while the sun is elsewhere (i.e. not directly shining through the skylight). Depending on the time of year and the time of day, the direct sun does peek through the skylight – it is during these times that the plants get direct sun, which is TOLERABLE for most of these tropical foliage plants.
.
In fact, for the ideal light for tropical foliage, I would NOT want completely *transparent* windows on the roof. I would want windows covered with a translucent white film to diffuse the harsh rays of the sun. The story is different for cacti and some succulents – they DO want the direct sun.
.
I think the subject of light, in terms of its importance and effect on plant growth, has been poorly explained. To understand light is to understand the driver of #plantlife. Watering is important but it is still second to light, yet so many new plant parents aren’t aware that soil moisture consumption is proportional to light intensity.
