Deformed and distorted tomato bottoms are commonly called tomato catfacinig. It happens most often on first tomatoes and is related to dips in temperature.

  1. Thank you for providing great information and pleasant videos. I bought your book and recommend it. The video made me hungry. I am heading to the kitchen to make a salad. Have a fantastic day

  2. Brandywines were the only ones I had catfacing issues with… and the plants didn't produce well for me. It's when critters made their home in the crevices that was a bit creepy for me, too. So, I replaced them by growing beefsteak and another slicer.

  3. Those tomatoes are massive!! I wish i could try one. Thanks for the information on this topic. Still waiting on my first full size tomatoes to ripen.

  4. My tomatoes all looks gorgeous now but at the end of the season (sept-nov) they look really ugly! I have never fertilized them after the initial planting so maybe that's why.

  5. timestamp 3:39 one of the tomatoes to the far right has little spots on it (I see 3), do you know what causes that? An insect?

  6. That "Green Zebra" looks a bit suspect… They should be regular-sized tomatoes, round and pretty uniform and they don't go that yellow when they are ripe. So seems like some cross-pollinated or different variety 😅 I've actually experienced that a lot these last few years, and it's really starting to bug me… Isn't the whole point of producing heirloom seeds to keep the old varieties alive? Yet so many of them are drifting away from what they used to be (I've had this with Black Krim a lot – I just can't seem to find the real thing anymore).

  7. Those are definitely some "franken-maters". 🙂 I bet they were delicious. I've always heard that cat-facing was caused by fused blooms – or, as you stated, deformed blooms. But had no idea the temp dip/fluctuation caused the malformation. Thanks Gary!

  8. My big tomatoes last year had a similar issue with bad cracking…I wasn't sure if it was from over watering. I would love to see some recipes you make with your tomatoes. I do alot of fresh salsa, ! Thanks for sharing. And I hope you have a blessed day 💚

  9. I have this only on my Beefmaster plant. Can you have too many tomatoes on one plant? I have a mortgage lifter that has close to 55 tomatoes. Crazy!!

  10. This is the first time I've seen this talked about, so thanks for doing this! I'm in western Oregon and the nights are still getting down to the low 50s, so my tomatoes are kind of taking a beating. It's been pretty discouraging.

  11. This happened to my beefsteak tomatoes. The leaves are oddly curled as well. It makes perfect sense! There were several cold spells where I had to cover the tomatoes with blankets. They do look terrible! Lol. But it’s good to know that they will taste just fine! Thanks for the explanation!
