I bought this raspberry bush this year and it was looking very healthy until a few weeks ago when it started yellowing. There were so many flowers but as shown in the pictures the fruits either didn’t make it or are very small and bitter. The yellowing so far is not affecting the primocane (fifth picture) however the leaves are paper thin. Is this a disease? We’ve had excessive rain here (zone 5) so I wonder if it’s just too much rain? I’m sad I was so excited for this bush.

  1. Looks like chlorosis. And yes likely for the soil being too wet for too long with the plant not planted on a mound for roor drainage.

The most common cause of yellow leaves on raspberry plants is chlorosis caused by nutrient deficiencies. Planting raspberries in a fertile soil enriched with well-rotted manure and a general fertilizer will go a long way in helping prevent chlorosis.

Avoid a wet and windy area, as raspberries do not like to stand in water or totally dry out. Every year, feed your raspberry plants with a couple of inches of organic compost or aged manure; dig it into the soil a couple of weeks before planting. (A good rate is about 3 1/2 cubic feet of compost per 100 square feet.)
