👩🏻🦰 A B O U T M E:
Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are YouTube, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s YouTube channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her YouTube channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

I would be interested to know who here is going to try and get a second harvest off in a cold climate? What are you doing to make it happen?
Omg you are the best!! So many great ideas in this video, so inspiring that im going to go plant some seeds right now. Thanks for the idea of the heat sink, it's such an economic alternative.
💚💚
I’m starting a second harvest and I’m going to accomplish it by binge watching all your videos! My biggest issue is that I live in Northern California so it’s gonna be 109F and dry until the end of December
❤️😎
I'm in Southern AB, zone 4. I'm not set up to keep growing outside this year but plan to grow what I can inside with lights. Looking forward to seeing your indoor setup.
Well you're doing better than me. The algo hates me. I pretty much do everything wrong. Haha….Here in Wpg I just put some lettuce, brocc, and cucumber seedlings in. Ive gotten a fall harvest of brocc before but I'm a little late. The cuke is just for fun. If the slugs and bugs don't eat everything I was thinking of a hot frame so I appreciate this info. Cool idea with the oil. To add to it. I wonder if the oil and a heater would work good. Perhaps the heater wouldn't have to turn on as much?
I listen to ALOT of YouTubes, and always learn something new from you! You probably don't have time to answer, but I have 8×4 raised beds, that I put cattle panels over and covered with greenhouse plastic. I didn't think about it getting cold at night when I built them like this. What is the best way to heat these? I would guess these heat sinks would not be enough?
Oregon zone 8 I'm growing carrots, various greens, bunching onions, peas, beans and lots of herbs for fall
Please do a video on how to keep mice out of your garden. Thamnks 🙂
I'm near Edmonton and I was waiting until it was not plus 30 to plant radishes again but then I looked and my first possible frost date is Sept. 1 sooo I guess it may be a bit late lol except that it's supposed to be plus 30 again. The weather's confusing lol
Only planted heading brassicas in late August which is probably too late but who knows, our falls tend to be quite mild (about 2 months left in growing season). I'm more optimistic about radishes, carrots, turnips, greens, beets, even zucchini. Cucumber will be dependent on whether I can keep them from succumbing to late season diseases. We will see if I have better luck with peas than last year now that the wild bunnies are fenced out.
Can lettuces maybe handle a light frost? The ones I direct sowed this spring germinated on April 12, and then we got some wet snow on April 18 that stuck to the ground for a bit in some places, and then on April 28 we seem to have gotten another light frost (little big of ice formed over puddles). The lettuces survived that just fine. I've found mustard greens are really hardy too. Last year most of them survived the -7C and 10cm of snow we got in late November, and started to flower in early-mid December when we got some mild temperatures.
Last Nov/Dec my arugula survived -4C uncovered without any damage, and -7C under snow without any damage, so it's frost hardy imo. But it will start taking damage around -5C uncovered, so it still has a lower tolerance than broccoli, kohlrabi, kale and most of the brassica rapas.
Been seeing my breath at night & I’m a zone4/5. Right on the line lol. It all depends on the lake affect here in Michigan.
Melville SK – ive got a high tunnel this year and have been charging up a GAHT system all summer long. cant wait to see how long i will be able to draw from it. 😬. Lettuce, spinach, cilantro, scallions and carrots are in the fall lineup.
I’m in zone 3 Alberta and love watching your videos. I always pick something up each time. Thank you.
Anybody know some zone 3+ perennial pond plants and if you know some edible ones? Thanks in advance.
Can u put brick in the hot water to keep the water hot. Just a thought. Great info doctor.
Great info!! But. Ugh. Can't believe it's already time to think about frost date
Perfect timing! I never thought about using oil for a heat sink. My dad used water bottles to keep it cooler in the day during summer.
I'm in Tdot ….I move my babies inside …. BUT !!! I have considered tents or even a small greenhouse … heat sinks to me sounds like "thermal mass" . Must be the same thing but smaller scale? LOVE this channel! Stay bright , plants love light !
You should for pawpaws, mulberries and American persimmons or hybrid persimmons they are tropical like plants that can grow there
Sorry, this is a completely different subject. Can I use zeolite as a substrate for semi-hydroponics?
Ps, I love your channel!!!
Whoa. Now I am geeked out. I'm also in the prairies.
Ashley, i put dolomite lime in my potting soil mix at 1TBs a gallon. been sitting for 3wks and my PH in media still reads 5.4, very acidic. Help me PLEASE!!!!!!! The BOY GROWER
My first year gardening and I started a couple weeks late. My first frost date is Sept 13. Wondering if my uncovered squash (only got to harvest a few, more flowering) and corn (at tassel stage) are done for?! 😬
I bought a large tunnel tent (arriving today) but don't want to put it up until spring 🤔
I also foolishly tried growing watermelon (not knowing how tricky it would be in Zone 3).. they are FINALLY growing and the size of tennis balls and I've covered them with plastic… but feeling doubtful and silly to think they'll keep growing. It's currently 8 degrees out as I type 😂🤭🥴
I’m in Connecticut, USA Zone 6. I run a garden club at my son’s elementary school and was hoping to do a fall crop for the kiddos! I’m thinking carrots, beets, leafy greens, and maybe potatoes? If I can get away with them? As well as a cover crop so they can learn about those too!
I also tried heat sinks last spring! I put out about 10 milk jugs of water every day but it got to be a lot of work. So excited to hear that oil is an easier heat sink!
Would soil from under a apple tree, at an orchard be good to make tea for cannabis plants? Is the soil full of beneficial microbes? Are there harmful ingredients in this soil ? I was wondering because the soil has years of fallen apples composting in the soil.
I am interested in your content…I live in Calgary and will follow you to see how you are making out with your garden.
Ashley, just wanted to let you know that I really missed our fall/winter date nights on yt when everybody is asleep and I grab my fav beer and watch your new contrnt:D your knowledge is appreciated by many!❤
Great video. You have inspired me to start my own indoor gardening channel for northern climates. I have a 10x10x7 tent with MH and HPS economical lights. All veggies I started from seed. I have green beans ready in under 6 weeks. Peas are over 6 feet tall. Tomatoes in full bloom and 4 feet tall. All in fabric bags and soil media with a drip system so no need to hand water. Check this out if you want. Fantastic advice that I appreciate. Cheers
I love your garden !! The size is so amazing!!
I'm from Calgary, starting a garden and this was super helpful!! So thank you for this!!
