Thank you SO much for answering my question about the “asters yellow” disease that is mowing through my garden !!!
I learned a GREAT DEAL from your response including that I have unknowingly set up the “perfect storm” for having this problem. IE the Chelsea chop and drop and then we are having a great deal of rain and humidity within the weeks following doing this .
I am broken hearted about having to tear out particularly the phlox ,along with the echinacea… , but gratefully you ALSO provided some pollinator friendly natives that I can plant instead .
The Raleigh plant nerd “nailed it” on this one 👍👏
TY!
We had tons of moths in May. Also a record amount of rain in May. I had "regular moths", these chubby moths, and over a dozen Hawk moths. I remember seeing so many moths covering one arborvitae. I think the moths like Texas more. I am barely starting to see bees and butterflies. It could also be that with all the rain, the pollinators are having a field day with all the wildflowers. There are many wildflowers.
Hi Jim. Help!!! I’m in NY zone 7b & I’ve been killing lanternfly by hand in my garden this year. Never seen so many. It’s in the nymph stage. Have you be dealing this issue where you are?
Up here it’s Pittsburgh region, we had like no rain in may, I have new pests and probably 10% of normal pollinator amount which is huge bummer. My yard was butterfly central and this year so far I’ve had TONs ants everywhere, paper wasps, and a gazillion birds though we don’t feed them and one of birds we’ve never had before regularly.
Question: how do you get crepe myrtles to rebloom after the first flush?
Good point on the night time moths Jim. Actually never thought of it, but yeah I remember driving at night and moths were everywhere
I have some Gaura I purchased last summer on clearance that were in quart size pots. This year they have come back 24-30” wide and 36” tall! I wasn’t expecting that (rookie mistake not taking the tag seriously🤦🏼♀️) I have them at the front of my bed and feel like they need to be moved back, as they are in front of shorter things. When would be a good time to move them? Thanks for your knowledge and insight!
QUESTION: What light category would you give a spot with, at best, filtered sun before 1PM, and entirely full sun after 2PM? It's a spot about 20 feet north-northwest of a near-mature willow oak? Zone 7A/B border.
When I grill I use Kingsford charcoal. Can I put the ashes in my garden?
Hi Jim! I recently purchased a Flame Thrower red bud. I am very excited for it to arrive! (Ordered by mail from Fast Growing Trees 🤞🏼) would it be okay to keep it in a pot while it is young? It will only be 2-3 feet tall. We have a lot of dogs and I thought this would be best to protect it until it gets larger. We are also in zone 8b and it’s triple digits some days, so I think it would be best to put in the ground later this fall. If this is okay, what sort of potting medium should be used? I know that potting soil would not be good. Thanks in advance! I love this tree from the videos you have posted at Dennis Warner’s house and want it to thrive.
Lol! “The compost tea police are coming for me now.” Got a good laugh thinking about exactly what that would look like. People need to chill. Ha, ha!
I have an interesting question for you. I can't mulch because the neighborhood cats use my flower beds as a litter box. Do you have any recommendations as to how to keep them out or what kind of mulch they might not like?
So add on to last week’s question 😅
We’re listing our house this week and there are certain plants I want to move with us…any advice for moving plants in the worst part of the summer? Better to go in ground (we are building so they’d have to go at my mom’s then be moved again next year 😳) or in big pots? When moving, should I prune back or remove blooms on plants that are blooming? Thanks for any advice!
Hi Jim,
I watch this video of yours "How to grow Leyland Cypress with a detailed description" and simply terrified myself, because I have one of these planted on the Southside of my home close to my house. It is growing fast, do you recommend me moving it. Is it safe if I trim it on the top and sides.?
Question: Should I plant clover as an alternative to grass lawn/ over grass lawn? If so, what type of clover do you recommend?
I am in Athens, Ga (Zone 8). My lawn is full of weeds and I am not really interested in spending time and money on a lawn. Clover sounds like a great alternative, but I fear that there must be drawbacks. Would love your thoughts.
Thanks again for a helpful video!
Hi Jim, Thanks as always. I have a Monarda question. Last year my Monarda grew so tall I had to support the plant. I noticed that your seem to be free standing in Garden Tour, I think #6. This year it has turned into a bit of a bully as you dais they do. My question is: This year they are growing along the ground and only turn up about 2 or 3 inches when they bloom. Why is that?
Hi Jim,
As trees and plants grows and the roots expand, should I be moving the drip emitters outward or just keep them by around the root ball?
Thanks!
Jim, what's the status of Rose rosette disease and attempts to do something about it?
Jim, my mother-in-law has asked me to plant a flower bed for her this autumn. However, for the past few years she has been using vinegar to irradiate lemon balm she planted there years ago. How can I plant foundation plants without having the vinegar kill them off?
Do mycorrhizae and other beneficial microorganisms live in container mixes?
Great and timely info on aster yellows. After seeing this I was able to identify what was wrong with a coneflower. You should do a video on this and how to help keep it from happening.
There’s some sort of dogwood in my hellstrip and it just looks awful. The leaves are withered and look like they’ve dried on the tree. I’m up in the PNW so we don’t really get rain in the summer. Is it just dying of thirst??
Hey Jim! Would you have any suggestions on how to plant in ground when compacted clay soils won’t drain at all? I’m looking at a possible 36×3” auger for drain holes solution but wondering if you had a better (and more cost efficient) solution. Thanks in advance!
