Today I’d like to cover the 9 most common mistakes new gardeners make and how I like to counter them. Some are gentle reminders (such as deadheading your flowers) and others make a significant impact on the quality, quantity and flavour of your harvests.

  1. because i am doing my tomato's in containers / pots , what i have done is just put each pot into a tub of water , hoping they will dive down and feed them selves during the week , is this a good or bad idea? they seem to look really healthy atm , but this is my first year lol

  2. That’s been my concern learning how to can or keep what I’m growing.. I’m still trying to figure out this garden growing, but preserving properly is my concern..

  3. An easy way I fill a gap, or do succession planting on the trellis, is to follow pole beans with peas. In the fall when the pole beans start reaching the end of their production, I plant pea seeds between the beans, then when the peas are about 3" or 4" high I cut off the bean plants at the soil level and pull them off the trellis. The peas then take over and provide a fall crop on the same trellis.

  4. I don’t have any seedlings standing ready in trays but I do have some direct sown seedlings that are a bit crowded but doing well. Watching this made me think about transplanting them to fill in places where the spring crops are giving up the ghost.

  5. Thanks Huw.. I have short attention span and LOVE that yours are short and snappy but help me move my garden on!

  6. My cosmos are Huge and NO blooms. I'm about to pull them out of my garden if they're not going to flower and are just being a water suck around my veggies.

  7. sotto voce…Huw! Huw! Huw!!!!!!!
I'm so excited about my garden! Thx for all the tips and advice you're sharing..we're listening and they work!!!!
I'm not on any social media platforms, none. I enjoy your vids here on YouTube. I must share with you and sam that I have been taking advantage of these 🔥 HOT 🔥 summer days by snipping, harvesting and laying my herbs out to dry. My absolute FAVORITES are basil, dill, and CARROT tops! I prune my carrots every few days, detach fronds from stems, feed stems to my turtles then dry them!!!! I add them to soups salads smoothies as a dish topper for enchiladas or pasta! I have jars and jars of the carrot tops. Love them!!! Thx for the video on watering and relaxing. I'm on it! 🌞 HSTL

  8. I sprinkle black pepper around and on my cabbage and other plants. Bugs of any kind stay away. I don't put it on the blooms for obvious reasons. Love your videos.

  9. I will tell Charles Dowding he is making a mistake by not using "natural" liquid feeds 🤣😂

  10. (1) Plant too early, plant too late, (2) Wrong irrigation patterns – too much, too little, (3) Wrong species planted in wrong season, (4) Over-composting, Under-composting, (5) Over-fertilization, under-fertiliztion.

  11. Huw wish you spoke about getting soil ready, if it’s clay do you dig it out and replace or just add on top and till ?
