This video is for anyone who has an interest in medicinal plants and the wild. Identification of plants is very important friends. It can save your life! Be cautious. Pokeweed is a poisonous plant.

Pokeweed is an actual wild plant. I feel blessed as many sprout in the back section of my gardens during spring time. My first encounter with this plant was in the wild. I was shocked when I saw sprouts in my backyard a few years ago. I am interested in the wild. This poisonous berry was easily identified by me. I have been studying wild berries and mushrooms for over 10 years. You should always make sure you know what it is that you’re eating prior to your consumption.

It is very important to identify the correct greens prior to consumption. Pokeweed will flush your system! It is a diacritic. It was traditionally used and named by Native Americans. The dark red berries were used in dyes and the young leaves were used in cooking and medicinal purposes. Pokeweed root has been used for achy muscles and joints, swelling of the nose, throat, chest, some skin infections such as tinea, sycosis, ringworm, acne, menstrual cramps, and fluid retention. Pokeweed berry is used as red food coloring and as a wine coloring agent. REMEBER to wear gloves when handling this plant! Wild plant identification is very important. It can save your life! Do not eat this unless you plan to boil the fresh leaves a few times prior to consumption. Boil and dump its water and repeat the process at least three times prior to eating. It will flush your system! Be Careful!

NOTE: Pokeweed is always eaten cooked. In fact, raw poke can make you sick or even kill you. It’s especially dangerous for children and older folks. Even though that sounds scary, don’t worry, you can eat it if you cook it. Place a pot with water on high heat. Allow it to come to a boil, add the fresh stems. Turn the heat down to medium-high heat and continue cooking for about 5 minutes. Drain the poke salad stems, rinse well. Repeat this process 3 times and you will have delicious cooked greens.

CAUTION: Don’t grab any leaves from this plant after it gives berries. The leaves that you select to cook with must be fresh and small in size and fresh green cuttings should be taken prior to plant reaching knee high.
