This DIY outdoor table is made out of 2x cedar and only requires a few basic power tools to build. I made a version with an all wood top as well as a version that uses some salvaged materials like a glass shower door and some stone tile. I prefer cedar for outdoor projects due to the look and durability but any 2x lumber will work. to find a cedar dealer near you go to:

  1. Very nice. Are you referencing Dylan Iwakuni? I love the use of cedar and upcycling the materials that you already had.

  2. That looks amazing. It would've taken someone ages to design and plan all that out beforehand to do it the "correct" way, but sometimes just going slow and using your eye is all you need

  3. Love. This along with "Concrete Coffee Table with Walnut Inlay" are two of my favorite design projects you've made over the years. Could easily see some Wave Hill Chairs around this.

  4. An outdoor table? There are a LOT of locations for insects/spiders to hide, looks difficult/time consuming to clean. Unless maintained, I can see this table warping in less than 4 seasons.

  5. Very bauhaus or De Stijl even more. Similar to Gerrit Rietvelds and Marcel Breuers works in 1920s

  6. I like the Japanese design cues, as well as the bringing together of wood, stone etc. Very Zen. 😉

  7. Definitely can see the japanese architecture once you mention it. Light, foating feel to their design. Love it!

  8. What a cool way, to 'built as you go'.
It's such a showstopper, I would totally use it an a dining room table, though!
It would also offer very interesting possibility for a low cost 'upcycling' build, made from whatever scrap wood one could find or cheaply aquire. It doesn't need to be all the same type of wood, after all, as long as it looks deliberate.

  9. I’m not sure what Japanese architecture you are talking about. But it reminds me of the wooden Japanese puzzles we had as kids.

  10. I'm guessing the Kasugai Museum by Kengo Kuma or the Swiss Pavillion by Peter Zumthor?

  11. This is SO beautiful! And it's bind boggling that you did not pre plan this design, it looks EXTREMELY premeditated haha!

  12. For an on the fly design it looks so awesome, Ben! The all wood vesion looked great too, but indeed too dark for the plant…

  13. I'm gonna guess it's based on a Kengo Kuma building. Hard to say which one though – he's been pretty prolific throughout the past 20 years. Edit: maybe Shigeru Ban over Kuma.

  14. Sadly I do not know anything about architecture, cultural and building styles or who the current masters of design are BUT I do know what I like. And this piece was absolute love at first sight! It’s definitely a table that would be the highlight of any designed backyard spaces. But can also see it being the gorgeous focal point of an indoor dining room or eat-in-kitchen in many different homes of people who individually love different design styles. You have honestly created a masterpiece. I am beyond impressed and extremely grateful that you posted this. Sincerely, thank you!

PS I love how customizable this piece is
PSS The only architectural genius I know of is Frank Lloyd Wright because I learned of him in high school and fell in love with his waterfall house.

  15. I really liked that you just built it like lego and felt your way through tbe project.

  16. I have seen Japanese furniture with similar construction elements. Looks really good. Hard to believe it was not planned

  17. Really cool. Reminds me of Enzo Mari approach to design. I think he'd be very pleased and inspired.
