I’m a hot mess in this video but there’s a lot happening. First off I’ve redefined this bed (check out the before and afters and let me know what you like better), so I’m sharing how I edge my beds.

Next up, planting the banana! Find out how it ended up here and what I’m planting around it.

  1. I’m so ‘over’ Nepeta. I can’t stand looking at it and trying to “revive” it so that is probably going @the end of this year.

  2. What particular brand of edger did you use in this video? I’ve looked for one in my town, but they all seem cheap and flimsy.

  3. I really like it Erin! I wish you could pop a greenhouse over the banana come winter and keep it there. Where else will you get a tree that grows over 11 ft in one season. And it's a gorgeous tree! The pairing with the Cana & Coffee Cups will look fantastic, and the dahlias also. Love it!

  4. Thank you for bringing us along. I too got a banana plant, I saw them on sale and I just had to grab one. I happen to be in the same zone as you and have just brought it outside. I don’t know that I am having success though as the leaves keep on going yellow then drying off…i notice it wanted more water but since it did grow a few new leaves, may be I need to re-pot it. I am truly enjoying your garden’s transformation as I am kinda doing the same thing except I am starting from scratch. Loving your videos and to be able to follow along and I Don’t mind the hot mess, it’s the true nature of gardening.

  5. I just went back to watch the banana tree removal and I can't help but ask how does it stay upright with so few roots?!

  6. Loving your 'hot mess – weird garden" style video! You're so relatable. Thanks for teaching as you grow. You're inspiring me to learn the botanical names of plants too.

  7. I'm so happy Erin brought us on her 'hot mess' saga of ' where and when is the banana going to be planted!' You're a natural beauty, Erin and real-life gardening inspiration for me

  8. What perennial geraniums bloom better for you? The only one I've found to bloom all summer is Rozanne. (though I cut it back after the first blooming)

  9. Loving the banana saga – gardening is trail and error every year so make it whatever you want. Thanks for the edging tips. I've got that black plastic edging you dig in, but it's popped out in 3 different places and it never quite goes back in again. I'm trying to convince my husband it's not needed and is actually just making more work for me. I may just trial getting rid of it in a smaller area and see what happens.

  10. That banana is having the best life. So glad to see all the fresh growth. The plant looks like it is smiling in that sunny location.

  11. I'm all about being a weird gardener and doing my own thing. Whatever you plant, and where, oval or other, GREAT!! Here's to you and the banana! 🎉

  12. Banana in Wisconsin weird? No weirder than a banana in northern Ohio. It's summer. A touch of the tropics is appropriate.

  13. Hot mess is my name and bananas is my game. 😃Why not a tropical look in Wisconsin? Wondering how an elephant ear would look with the banana plant. Thanks for the introduction to the insect frass. I'll be adding that to my list of soil enhancers. Thanks also for the overhead still.
