This is an enchanting holiday farmhouse design. The project involves renovating a typical French farmhouse in the Perch area. Additionally, the barn situated close by will also be converted. The owners, a family of six, wish to create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere for weekend and holiday get-togethers.

Situated amidst a verdant forest in the core of the Perche natural reserve, our objective was to conserve the exquisite vista of the garden while traversing the fields connecting the house and the barn. The planner resolved to allocate the former as a designated playground for kids, whereas the latter would be a common area and kitchen, providing a panoramic outlook of the nearby countryside.

A serene area for the parents will be included on the second floor. The main entrance is covered by a “ball joint” that joins both living spaces. The connection between the two buildings was designed to be a footbridge, which is visually minimalist and lightweight, allowing for physical access between them. The inspiration for this design came from traditional Japanese covered bridges, which have poles and double-slope roofing.

The designer’s goal was to create a volume that would match the existing building without interfering with the original material. The volume is light and discreet, allowing for an open view of the surrounding nature and vegetation. The designer’s reinterpretation of the Japanese style takes the form of a volume laid on the ground with a wooden frame covered by a very thin double sloped zinc roof. The frame is based on a repetitive frame made up of round poles that support a light zinc cover.
