Texas is suffering extreme heat index temperatures. We expect ours to hit close to 120 today which is extremely dangerous. How will this affect our garden and yours if you’re in our area?

Going on day 5 without power NE TX. Just miserable.
Be safe Jill & every one in Texas. Sending prayers.
On the way home from church yesterday the outside temperature thermometer in my car was reading 104*. It's just awful! Stay safe!
Minnesota here. Thank you for the update. I don’t know how you guys can handle those temps. God bless you.
I havent seen honey bees in my area of Washington like I have in the past years….
Here in southeast Texas we are experiencing the same thing! We water every night to keep plants and trees somehow hydrated! It makes you wonder if someone is playing with the weather, testing our resilience! 😉. Still, God is on the throne and in Him we trust for the well-being of every seed we plant!
A couple of thoughts… Might an ice house roof help reduce the heat in your home and maybe even over the chicken coop? From what I understand, it is a double-layered roof with an air gap in between the layers. The wind would blow off some of the heat before it reaches the lower roof. Second, I understand it might be difficult to establish trees when your summers get so hot… but if you could establish trees, might that provide some shade and relief from the heat? I learned to grow using Permaculture principles and I recall that establishing trees can help create a microclimate that could allow you to grow some crops beneath it. I was also thinking walipini (earth sheltered greenhouse) but that may be more for growing in winter.
I have lost two of my hens to this heat already. They have plenty of water and shade but it’s just too hot for much of anything to survive outside.looking to put a misting system on their area. Just one more thing.
New subscriber here. Thank You, for sharing the real news on your utube channel. Texas/USA 🇺🇸
How much extra water are you giving tomatoes and cucumbers on these hot days?
Wondering if I can try to plant some sweet potato slips I just got ready? I dropped the ball on my summer garden but looking forward to the fall grow season!
We our getting little of rain hit and miss all week enough to get the ground wet . We our almost in a drought the temp was up in the 80’s and 90’s an low 50’s.Hope you all get rain real soon prayers for Texas to get rain.
Prayers for you and all of us. God bless Texas! 🇨🇱
California is having cooler weather for this time of the year we even had a big rain storm the temperatures should be in the hundreds and no rain until September I'm been enjoying the weather as long as it last my garden never looked better Hope you get your good weather back soon.
Yep here in North Georgetown our heat index got to 121 degrees today. We have several tomatoes ripening and many buds hopefully they will produce but this heat and daytime sun is getting to our garden. I have canned 10 qts tomatoes and 3 cans of pickled yellow jalopeno's as the pack from Survivor Seeds show green jalopeno but they are yellow. Our Son is South Dakota said the same for his jalopenos. Good time to start seeds for fall. Survivor Seeds emailed me and are standing behind their seed packet and sending us another Green Jalopeno packet to plant. We are putting a fan out by our chickens also. Hope these 100 + days break soon but we're not that lucky!
I had some heat exhaustion today. It is no joke. Please stay safe and inside if you can!
We are upper Midwest. Very few pollinators here either. We are in another drought same as last year in 2022. The rains are all but useless so lots of hand watering. The saving grace is very low humidity and we are just now getting into the upper 80’s after a hot May. I feel your pain. Be careful. God bless! Prayers coming your way. I’m just going to keep on as normal and start a few other seeds and pray for rain and decent temps.
Control the weather and you can control the food. Control the food and you control the people.
Goodness, that is such heat! Prayers for relief 🙏❤️
Welcome to Arizona! Amen, I just love this heat. Don’t like anything lower than 95! My propane company called and asked if anyone is living in the house. I replied yes. Then they asked if I run my air conditioner? Nope. Maybe just a couple ceiling fans. Love the heat.
Shade cloth.
Where I'm at in Minnesota, we have not had rain since march. And we've had several 90 degree days all ready, we usually only have 13 a year, all this week will be over 90, we'll blow through that record. I cry everyday for rain, and less heat… I'll pray for you too.
Prune those tomatoes, the humidity will kill them, need more air flow.
I have to wait till the late afternoon. The sun passes my trees and really helps.
Yes, for sure. Extreme heat hit here in western Texas. Over 100's all week and 106 degrees predicted for Saturday. Had more than usual rain, then the heat came. Best Wishes to everyone.
Welcome to climate change.
Oh bless your hearts ~ Would it help if you trimmed off the tomatoes branches around the bottom for more air circulation? Another idea is that we put a fan on our chicken to give them a breeze when it gets this hot. Believe me the chicken stay right in front of it. Praying for you all to have rain and cooler temps.
The heat is something terrible here in South Texas. The first time in many years I had to cut my lawn around 8pm even with that it was still 98 degrees.
One summer we had the same kind of heat-wave here in Missouri. The HI was 115-120 every day for almost a month, and not a drop of rain. My husband used the tractor to haul our old chicken tractor up into the front yard under our maple trees, and I'd get up at 4 am every morning and move the chickens (we only had 18 of them) out into the chicken tractor. then I'd move them back into the coop at 11pm, with a fan on them so they could roost.
That fall we built a new coop under a huge old Oak tree, and they're more comfortable now even on the hottest of days.
I definately feel for ya! I'll pray that you get a break soon. We're in a bad drought here too.
Im from the north central texas area. I worry for my relatives still there. Kinda what area are you in? Without giving too much away!!!!
Praying for you all in Texas. I live in zone 9b SW Florida and I do my gardening in the evening now from 7PM till dark. Stay hydrated and safe.
Hi Jill it was so good to see yawl!! The heat is on for sure. When we got home we harvested lots of tomatoes, beans and peppers. I'm going to hand pollinate our cucumbers as well. Stay safe in this heat. We are praying for a break and some rain. God bless.
Praying with/for y’all. It’s really cool here today, especially for June.
A bit of topic, but for those of you who keep freezer(s), as you use up items in your freezers, replace/fill that space with frozen containers of water (I use milk cartons). My grandma always said a full freezer is an efficient freezer. The milk cartons stack nicer than plastic jugs, plus they are more space efficient in ice chests. Of course the water itself is not usable since it has milk proteins from the cartons in it no matter how much rinsing I do, but they do work. In a power outage having that empty space filled with blocks of ice helps.

We have not planted any seeds, It will get 120 index, the temp here is 107 BUT it is too hot to grow any thing so we will be planting the last of july and hope the temp will cool down, The pistachio are doing great but with 2 to 3 weaks with over 110 temps. You may have to freeze some coke bottles and hang them on fans to keep your green house cool enough to produce your existing plants. thanks and stay safe.
Take cuttings off your tomato plants and root them in water. Much faster than from seeds. I use the suckers that I am cutting off anyway.
