Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

I’m so late to the party here – what shoes are you wearing??? I’ve worn out my birks and chacos aren’t working on my pregnant swollen feet lol and yours look SO comfy
We drove throughBatesburg/Leesville last weekend, & had hoped to find your Mercantile in progress, but an oversize had torn down electric wires & a transformer… cops & fire engines everywhere…. So we drove on 🙃…. Found some great farm stands on the way to Spartanburg…. Yummy strawberries, peaches etc… 🤗
I live with my daughter and her family, and I'm the family cook for the nine of us (4 adults, four teens, one kidlet who eats like the teens). Everyone used to love green beans. Love them. Sadly, they no longer do. They all used to love vegetables of all sorts and now they can't be bothered with anything plant-related, which makes this grandmother's heart sad. I've tried all sorts of cooking methods – steaming, stir frying, roasting, raw in salads. Nope to all the vegetables all the time, except potatoes, corn and some of them will eat cucumbers. Maybe one day they'll come back to the vegetables that they once ate willingly. I really mainly wanted to say that bucket of beans is just gorgeous, and I hope you enjoy them!
At the market here that would be about $65 in beans.
Bear just basking in the garden while the beans roll in! Love seeing a bucket of beans, one of my favorite veggies!
Someone recently found that sour dough starter works really welll for trapping slugs. I haven't tried it yet. tried the beer but my dogs found it and drank it….
Jess have you seen those 1 pot dishes with a row of chicken, new potatoes, and Italian green beans? You sprinkle zesty Italian seasoning over the whole thing. It's delicious! I think even Miah would love those green beans. 🙂
I had become discouraged about gardening in the summer because typically is so dry and I do not have a ground well. I have been researching dry gardening and trying to make the most of the right now situation. To satisfy my need to grow, I mainly planted in pots and did a few in-ground spaces of native wildflowers that do not require much water. I was just trying to limp along until time for fall gardening, which has done better in this climate. Then I heard Jess comment in another video about the predicted wetter-than-usual weather and I jumped to it!! I have added and expanded planting spaces! I am so excited!!!! Thanks again!
Your garden is looking so good! You can send some of that cool wet weather to Tucson!
I live in eastern Washington and it’s been in the upper 60s and upper 40s at night. Usually we’re also in the 90s and 50-60s at night. Such a weird, cool summer
Beer does work, but here in western Washington, I'd have to own a brewery to take care of all the slugs in my gardens. I use Sluggo.
So grateful for your information
I just wanted to say thank you. I'm a first time gardener this year and I get tons of inspiration from you. I love your calm spirit and the knowledge you share. I have felt a major push to learn as much as I can about gardening and providing for my family. Watching your channel gives me peace rather than anxiety. Thank you!
I wish you could blow some of your weather our way in Texas!
chip drop charges the arborist a pretty big fee so most do not patisipate. DO NOT USE THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just call the arborist directly.
Do kids have chores?
Jess, how do you protect yourself from bug bites & ticks? I’m using the strong spray with deet but wanted to see what works for you
Jess, your videos are one of the only things keeping me going just now. My day job is atrocious at the moment. I can't wait until the evening when I get to joyfully work/play in my garden with my husband and then pop on headphones and watch you while I write up my garden diary. If you can make this your life, so can I. Thank you for your content from the bottom of my heart ❤
Jess look up the recipe for Green beans Bundles. They are wrapped in bacon sprinkled with brown sugar, onion & garlic powder. They might change Miah's opinion. Happy Gardening friend.
Hey Jess, All your 90°+ temps are here in Minnesota the coldest place on earth. We are 90° to 94° everyday this week and again next week. Now my tomatoes loves this temp and I have thousands of little yellow flowers everywhere. Your beans look so good I planted about 10 varieties of beans this year. Peace and blessings
Those tiny Dixie cup shot glasses are literally a dime a dozen, and you just pour a shot of cheap workin man's beer in a dozen of those pushed into the soil around the bed, drink the rest and the next morning they're all full of dead snails and slugs. It's awesome!
Have you done a greenstalk dwarf tomato update yet ? 😀 🙌 🍅🍅🍅
Did you harvest all those beans on your feet like that…? I can't make it more than a few plants down before I've sunk to my knees!
I like green beans! It’s one if my favorite.
Sunday we had marble size hail and that just doesn’t happen here in Portland, OR. It ripped apart my bean leaves and my pepper leaves. I am hoping that they will just be stunted for a few days and rebound. Iron phosphate is a excellent slug and snail treatment.
Spring seasons with daily rain are good for production.
How weird that you should be harvesting bush beans right now. I planted some a month ago and they never germinated, I'm talking to the supplier about it at the moment. But if I don't get some in soon, the harvest will be lost. I put in a few dwarf snow peas to fill the gap, but it's not the same.
Oh I am so anxious for my green beans to produce. I had to replant 3 times. Yours look great!! Love the videos, keep them coming! GOD bless
How strange that you're talking about Chip Drop when I just got my first shipment today! But here's the wild part…
I signed up for a new drop at noon.
I got a delivery at 12:30!! I couldn't believe it. I know folks who have waited MONTHS to get a shipment!!
I’m sorry, I missed what you were saying because I was so focused on bear.
We don't like green beans but we love yellow. They are more tender than green.
We live in a city with almost half a million people and still can't get chip drop after trying for 3 years. I love Ryan Hall's channel! And we are also in the wetter part. We've had close to our annual rainfall in about 6 weeks.
Jess, please don't eat raw green beans, they are low-grade poisonous due to phytohaemagglutinin. It makes your red blood cells clump.
I’ve used beer traps before, and they are great for some slugs. Unfortunately we get a yellowish slug that seems completely disinterested in beer. I noticed though that those yellow ones tend to be attracted to the dust under the chicken feeder. I go out at night with a bucket of really hot water with a tiny drop of dish soap in it and wearing gloves I pick up the slugs and drop them into the water. I also do the same when we have slug plague (usually during wetter summers) and there are so many slugs that I find slugs climbing the trees to eat leaves. A few nights out can be enough to really reduce the population. A word of warning: the dead slugs will stink when they decompose, so I usually bury the contents of the bucket the following morning.
Jess, your garden ist so amazing, I love the way you take care of it.
Have you ever tried a salad with green beans, tomatoes, onions and feta cheese?
Your family will love it 😊
Blessings from Germany 👩🏻🌾🌹
We got a bunch of free wood chips from Duke Energy last year because they cut a bunch of trees on our property that were close to their power lines. We asked for the chips and they said no problem.
I use epsom salt for slugs I’m on a balcony fast working too lol
Man those plants are loaded! That’s amazing! 8:01
Also I love Ryan halls channel. Funny though, last winter it was predicted that in our area we were gonna be dry and not a lot of snow in the mountains. 🤣🤪 I’m so glad he was wrong 🤣
👆Hey Jess, have👆 you tried or looked into this ? Totally curious about what you think 😊

I can grow just about anything but green beans. Why?? 😩
I hope one day I can wake up and be in my garden at 5:45am, sevens days a week.
If your wood chips is from a diseased tree, is it safe for the walkways! B
I love your impressive green bean harvest…so impressive !! Yes Bear is an awesome protector dog who looks extremely smart and sweet. Do you ever let him eat green beans which are crunchy and irresistible to a dog and very healthy.
I come to watch the food and listen to your soothing voice. Thank you.
Great harvest!
I am growing 3 varieties of bush beans this year and 3 varieties of pole beans to see which we prefer. I will get calima seeds to try next-thank for tips!
I know what y'mean about green beans – even though I like them. Sometimes they just feel bulky when eating them. Though cooked enough, their fiber remains strong.
When making my multi dried bean & veggie soup a while ago, I didn't have any kale, which makes a great soup green. I did have green beans & my soup seems off if I don't add the basics like garlic, "the Holy Trinity" AKA onions, carrots & celery, plus at least one dark leafy green.
The beans were in the 'frige in a bowl, from the day before, & already cooked, so I used those instead of not making the soup without kale, adding them in near the end.
They were so much more flavorful & enjoyable being reheated in my soup. They were more tender & I liked them in the soup for the change from kale.
Similarly I like green bean in a classic Greek preparation with a red, tenderizing tomato sauce. Perfection.
I might try canning them with chunks or torn canned Italin plum tomatoes, & also try some with blanched fresh tomatoes & some olive oil to see which way I prefer.
Your gardens are inspiring.
