Welcome Gardeners! My task for today is finally addressing my disgusting bird fountain! It’s been filling with algae so quickly as the weather gets hotter causing me to need to clean it more and more often! 😩 Yesterday, I found some algaecide at Wild Birds Unlimited to hopefully keep the algae down! Everyone cross your fingers! 🤞🏼 Enjoy!

I’ve heard adding a few copper pennies in a bird bath helps with algae
I think it was Erin, Impatient Gardener who used a pond dye! In a big barrel 🤔. Apparently safe for wildlife if I remember correctly. I had never seen nor heard if it! Check it out Janey😊, it may help hide your stains (if you want to hide them)?
Please make sure to keep us updated. I would love it for my bird bath and my Mother in law’s fountain. My daughter has her first day of Summer today . We go on road trips every couple of weeks instead of summer camps. It okay s so much fun to create memories with her. I hope y’all have a wonderful summer break.
You can use pool algaecide.Just use a much smaller dose.
Good luck… It was my job to try and keep 20+ fountains clean when I worked at the Garden Center. Nothing worked very good.🌻

I have two fountains that I clean every 2 or 3 days. I just use a forceful spray from my water hose. Works like a charm and very rarely do I have to scrub. I have found that cleaning them on a regular basis keeps the maintenance minimal. I do add something similar to what you're using every 2 weeks. That seems to do the trick.
Not a fun job but it looks great! I’d love to have a fountain but I feel like it would be a fun for all for the mosquitoes.. being amongst all the rice fields, the mosquitoes are just insane here. Insane!!! It’s awful lol When we went on the garden tour we kept saying “oh how nice would it be to just sit and relax in this yard in the evening “ something we can’t really do unless your willing to sacrifice yourself to the mosquitoes 🙃
My girls love the fireplace screensaver too when they sleep in the living room 😂
This made me wonder if I really want make my planter..same company with 4 birds..into a fountain. Ya sometimes that saying…be care what you wish for…yep that's now swirling in my head. Hi Janey! I’ve been watching your channel for a couple of months now and have a few questions…maybe they can end up as content videos.
1. Can you show where your drip irrigation begins and show they routes it takes to each area? Is it originating from an outdoor water faucet? Do you get those supplies online or in a big box store?
2. While you were showing the fountain behind you and the new feet on your pot, I was wondering if the pot runoff will stain your concrete? If so can you put a small saucer that is lower than the feet to collect any of the drippage?
3. I noticed a hummingbird on your feeders while you were showing the fountain behind you. Wouldn’t it be adorable to just run a short video, like an ASMR video just showing that area with the fountain, new tree and hummingbird feeders, also while listening to the fountain? I know I’d love that.
I love gardening videos and am in zone 9a or b in East Houston area and I know it’ll be super hot and I’d love to set up drip for my flowers and bushes in my garden. Just needing to know where to start…

thanks for sharing! i had the same type of fountain and exactly same issue! did not know about this product last year. had my lawn guy cleaning up fountain. he used chlorene probably too much and when water drained out to my garden, killed a few plants rightaway. then i read about wrong ratio of chlorene could kill many micro-organisms in the soil and make plants ill. this year they came back with ill looking. very much regretted and will be thinking to avoid this type of design with next fountain.

Im having terrible issues with algae in my fountain. My fountain is an 80 gallon antique syrup kettle with antique hand pitcher pump. This is the first time i have had an issue. Previously i had aquatic plants in it. When we had the arctic blast in December, it ended up killing most of the plants. I'm zone 8b in North Florida. I really enjoy your channel!

You might take the moss away from your Maple to help it dry out easier and replace it when it's dried enough.
You're such a good mom, Janey. I think it was very wise to back off on filling every moment of the girls' summer vacation with camps. It is every bit as important to have down time, as it is to have activities. That is how we refresh and energize ourselves. You made me laugh when you were tasting your blueberries. Bet you can't eat just one, LOL! I know I can't 🤣
I have the same problem with my fountain. One tip I took from @GardenQueen is to use a shop vac to suck out the water. I bought a cheap one specifically for my fountain. Maaaybe $40?? It’s so helpful. Then you can suck all the gunk out of the pump too!

Summer, girl’s sleep over, great memories! My dad had a camper in our backyard that was said “restoring “ and that’s where the Barbie village was until 13teenish, when sleepovers involved neighbor boys coming to visit! So, word of advice, keep Barbie inside!

Have you watched utube MR MAPLE?? They are awesome they say do not overwater JAPANESE MAPLES.. but know you live in a dry climate I live on gulf coast and only water mine in a pot once week it’s doing great for about 6 years but need to plant it!! MR MAPLE SAYS OVERLOVING JAPANESE MAPLE IS THE DEATH OF THEM!!! Feet will help …good to know about the algae cleaner!! Love your back yard so pretty!!!! Thanks 😊
You should remove the green tape holding the maple to the support stake. It can strangle the trunk
I will be at the store bright and early for the algecide!!! I have a bird bath out in the sun that gets yuck within a couple days. Thanks for idea! Though we have a pool I’d never considered algicide that would be bird safe. How cool
The algae infested water would have actually been good nutrients for some of your flowers – the presence of algae actually means an excess of nitrogen (probably in the form of ammonium or nitrates from the birds). I'd dump that water out around some trees or shrubs on your property and I think they would thank you for it 🙂
I have found out the hard way, using bleach it ruins the caskets in ur pump, it took me 3 pumps before the company told me it's a no no
I've used the Fountec for a long time, doesn't work as well as they claim but it is better than nothing. I suggest you get one of those really large, absorbent sponges like you would wash a car with to help empty the water out, faster than a cup!

Janey if the algae stuff you bought doesnt work i have a 3 tiered fountain and i use baking soda in mine works a treat and keeps it pretty clean doesnt seem to hurt the pump
